Not long after getting my 06 I did the stock air box mod and put a amsoil filter in it since I got sick of seing my filter minder going darn close to going in the red with a brand new stock filter. well Its been about 30k and while doing maintence I knowtice it had almost pulled the minder down to red like the stock filter did. I tried to clean it out with compressed air but not muchcame out and its still pulling the filter minder down. I know they say they are good for 100k but I'm wondering how much it will flow if i keep it on there that long. 5o bucks is kinda high for a filter that only last for 30k.

I clean mine at every oil change. Just blow it out with the air compressor. You should have been cleaning it out all along the way of your 30K.

CD

I guess I should have cleaned it a little more offten but I'm used K&N type filters. But most of my miles are up and down I95 and in and around DC.

It may be the air box

I don't think your filter is your problem. Many on this board, me included, have noticed opening up the air box alleviates the filter minder getting pulled down. I noticed a pulled down filter minder same as you on the stock element. I installed a PSM intake on the air box and continue to use the stock element because it still has some life in it. Problem solved the minder doesn't get pulled down anymore. The stock air box is too restrictive, even for a stock motor. I'll replace the air filter with the EaA when it's time to change filters.

This is Amsoil's recommendation on cleaning, located on the box it came in:

VACUUM CLEANING:

Place filter on a flat surface and carefully vacuum the filter media on the dirty side where the incoming air flow enters the filter. Be carefull not to rub the filter pleats with the vacuum cleanig attachments as this may damage the filter. Using a vacuum with too much suction may damage the filter.

SHOP AIR CLEANING:

Hold the filter with one hand and carefully blow the filter media at a 45 degree angle on the "clean" side of the filter using low pressure (15 to 20 PSI shop air. Be carefull not to rub the filter pleats with the air nozzle as this may damage the filter. Using too high of air pressure will damage the filter media.

I have cleaned mine twice and used the "shop air" method, with no ill effects.

Here's the "cure" for airflow restriction with the OEM filter housing:

Shucks, you might well be able to pull that filter minder down even WITHOUT an element in it with the restrictive housings DC provides - a 2 inch hole saw will work wonders at correcting DC's design error... ;) :-laf

Gary,

His is a 3rd Gen truck, so the housing is a bit different. However, it can be modified such as yours as well.

I knew his was a later truck - just used mine as an example of what can be done, even with the newer ones... ;)

I HAve a 4in duct running from the bottom of the air box to right behingd the front bumper. I'll have to try and clean it again. After I first put it in and did the air box mod it never pulled it down but i had knowticed alot more black smoke than normal lately when pulling hard or just playing with people, and the rest of the truck is bone stock.
