Simple green works great for keeping the motor clean, but FYI only, after 2 or 3 times my lettering started to come off on the valve cover. Not a big deal, but now 1. 5 years and 6-8 washing later my valve cover is straight black. My process has been soaking simple green (50-50 mix) for 5 minutes and rinsing off with a garden hose - no pressure. Works great. I do cover my AFE filter and the filter for my Pac-Brake compressor.

Just make sure you wrap up the distributor and spark plug wires. :-laf :-laf :-laf. ok, I guess we don't have to worry about that, but I think that's where the theory of keeping the engine running while you're washing it comes from. You shouldn't need to keep a diesel running while you wash it. It will start just fine wet, unlike a gasser with a bit of water in the distributor. I don't think pressure washers and steam cleaners are a good idea though, as these can still penetrate the weatherproof wire connectors and leave moisture on the contacts, and then that same weatherproofing keeps em from drying out for a longer time.

Funny you should mention this. Just a little bit ago I had to go rescue my dad in his 90 Chevy pickup. He was washing the pickup. Got in it, and got about 100 feet before it died. First time he's ever had it happen to him in that pickup, which my grandpa bought with it was 9 months old.
