Does anyone know the proper way to clean the engine? Is it as simple as going to a car wash and using the high pressure guns or shoid I avoid it all together? I am concerned as to whether certain components are not sealed and not meant to be cleaned. Thanks for the advice!!!

Don't know if it's proper...

For the past five years, I've always cleaned my engine when I washed my truck, although that is not frequently.

I just mist it with the garden hose nozzle to get it damp, spray it down with Simple Green, let it sit for for a bit while I work on the body, then go back and hose it down good. It's never given me any trouble, although you probably shouldn't drench the alternator too much. I wouldn't spray it with my pressure washer, though.

I had a fuel pressure sender explode under the hood, drove for quite a ways with it leaking. As you can imagine it was quite a mess. Super-Clean and a pressure washer everywhere, only problem was it took about an hour for the water in fuel light to go out till the connector was dry.

I use the engine cleaner setting at the local high pressure car wash it squirts a green stuff at low pressure, I then wash the rest of the truck like normal then when I rinse, I rinse the engine with high pressure, I do this almost every time I wash my truck.

I have done this with my last three CTD trucks, I wash everything under there. I do lube most moving parts after it dries, but after 5 years of doing this I never had a problem. (yet) My engine is usually cleaner than my paint. lol

Coca-Cola is also corrosive - and people drink it.

Anything in moderation is okay. Spray on the simple green... . then wash it off. Don't leave it on for a few days... then wash it off.

washing engine

When washing the engine, its a good practice to use "cling wrap"

on the parts that are subject to water, such as the TPS, the Pac/Brake solonoid slide valve & alternator. This holds to the parts good and keeps the water out. If any of you are not experienced in the duties of the "kitchen help", most of our spouses have this on hand. It really works.

I did the simple green and low pressure garden hose and I have also used the engine cleaner at the car wash and washed it off with low pressure (just don't pull the trigger). This was with my 2000. Have not needed to wash the 2002 yet but it is coming up in a month or two. I have found that if you keep it clean it is easier to keep it that way with light washing and no scrubing.

I use the pressure washer at work. I just try to stay away from the alternator and the air cleaner. I've been doing it to all my trucks for years and have never had any problems.
