I am going to be cleaning out the fuel/pre heater screen. I am not quite sure how to do it though. Do I need to buy the new seals and ring to do this? My truck only has 60,000 miles on it and as far as I can tell most people don't check them until 100,000 miles or so. Should I check it? Any tips on how to do it would be appreciated. I guess I need to buy a installation book. Should I order one from Cummins or dodge or would another manual do?

Thanks for the help

russ

97 2500 4x4 straight piped, KDP Killed, Autometer Guages ordered today.

I blow mine out once/yr. It always looks clean but a lot of the gunk in diesel fuel is nearly clear so I blow it out to be sure nothing is in it . My gasket has been OK. I hear they're hard to find if you ruin one. The bottom of the bowl has a hex lug. Reach down from above with a 17mm box end to take the bowl off. Then take the nut off that hold the screen in. It's a 5 minute job. Craig

Sent dad to Cummins of Cumblerland in Nashville since he was on business down there one day. Dad being very non-mechanical I sent him with part #'s, names, and cost's.

Guy said it showed 12 on the computer but they turned the place upside down and couldn't find one!

Oh well first experience with Cummins sure others will be better

I love my cummins dealer

A little ole rinky dink parts shop in an old converted restaurant:D They dont have everything there, but whatever I needed they had in a day. Got the right parts everytime.

Like I said "first dealing with" not repeated unliked service, and from what my dad said they absolutely turned the place upside down for 20 minutes trying to find one before telling him they couldn't find it. That's service!:D

Take a piece of poly maybe six or eight feet square and drive onto to catch any fuel that spills. It's also a good time to do the fuel filter.

Hummin, you can order over the phone and have Cummins UPS your parts if you order with a credit card or have an account.

I check mine every filter change. You can get water traped in it that won't show up in the main filter. It happened to me twice. The strainer o-ring is re-useable many times if you don't over tighten.

illflem,

What is the site online? The nearest cummins dealer is 2 hrs away. I guess for things like this I need to by a repair manual. Can you recommend one?

Thanks for the advice

Russ

If you mean Cummins as far as I know there is no online ordering, but most dealers have a toll free phone number and will UPS to you. This site has many answers to common repairs with tips you won't find in any manual-- http://dodgeram.org/ram.html

The manual doesn't have part numbers. Best manual to get is the Chrysler service manual order it here--

Here's the link to go straight to the '97 manual $90
