Clearcoat paint repair ??

On my 00 I have the dark red metallic paint. There was some green paint splashed on the hood in it's past life some how. Upon advice from a couple of buddies... (I know, i know) I tryed Wet sanding with 1000 and 2000 wet sanding. The paint came off easily and the job actually turned out well. However, Even after wetsanding with 2000 grit and then polish compounding I can still see the difference after a couple of coats of Meguier past carnuba. I'm going to get some Wax remover and restart on this to try to get it right next weekend and I'd really like any inputs on the proper way to do it so I know next time. The paint is smooth,the coat is shiny just that there is a haze where I worked with the sanding. And on the subject of paint and body, I've found at a local AutoZone a kit called Epoxy repair kit for plastic and flexible body parts. I'm going to try repair a crack in one of my dually fenders so if anyone has anything to say about this repair also please let me know. Sure I can take it to a pro but that would ruin the fun of letting them fix something made worse than it was originally. Thanks for any help.

Keep in mind that I know next to nothing about paint, especially clearcoat, so just ignore what I have to say until someone with the know-how shows up. Until that happens, I'll help boost my post count and tell you what I think about the situation.



I believe you must have sanded through the the clearcoat and no amount of Mequiars will fix it. You need to re-clearcoat the area to make it right. You will probably have to to the entire panel, to do it right, but a good body painter probably can feather it to make it look good, without doing the whole panel.

I really don't think I've went through the clearcoat yet Doc. An earlier posting said that when I used the polishing compund then the red would start coming off on the rag. Makes sense to me. I was really careful to take it easy and I think I've scratched the top of the clearcoat and now need to shine it out. As it is thin by all accounts, I'd like some advice before I do go through it on the second attempt. Thanks for the welcome, I've lurked here for awhile.

Very important... how did you polish, by hand? and what with? . .



You have to 'step off to finer and finer scratches until the shines back.



After the color sanding (2000 grit) it needs to be buffed with a compound (like 3M Perfect It or Meguires No 7??) and you hve to use a power buffer - a commercial type which will get the job done with a good wool pad.

Then polish with a foam pad and polish (3M finess it, Meguires No9).



Now hand polish it with a hand polish, after that wax it for protection.



We never 'spot paint' whole panels - unless really necessary (like roofs to quarter panels) because it will probably show an edge and could very possibly peel back. To repaint that hood will prbably be in the $200. 00 range.
