Thought I'd update everyone on how I'm going about fixing this absolutely the most annoying frigging irritating. dad gum $%#@% noise I've had in my steering column for over 5 years now. Last Wednesday I went to Jim Browne Citrus Dodge in Dade City Fl.and ordered a brand new column to the tune of $1500.00! I called today and it came in so I made an appointment for this Thursday 7/21/16 to have it installed.!

Update, I had the dealer install the new column and BAMM, noise is gone. I did ask to keep my old column to figure out the source of the noise. So I put the old column on my bench and when you spin the shaft the clicking is there! I believe its in the top steering column bearing. I made a short video with my I phone to show the noise but I have to have help on how to post it. I hope to dissect the column to find the exact source. I'll post the results when I know. But oh how sweet it is to be done with the clicking and popping!.

It could be the clock spring, which operates cruise and other functions on the wheel. My 01 started clicking and one day made a pop noise and to my suprise it broke. On second gens there was a recall for breaking clock springs. If you lose any functions on the wheel the clock spring has broke.

Mine has been making "the noise" for some time, maybe a year now. Its more like a "crackling/popping" sound since it's louder than a minor clicking would be and, it is not limited to 1/4 turns, it's 360 either way.
Other threads on this topic are posted elsewhere on TDR and mention it being the clock spring which I have purchased but not yet replaced as I haven't found an exact step by step procedure for the removal and reinstall of the wheel for 05.

Would like to know if there was a recall for the 05 as well as the earlier mods.
So many body, chassis, interior issues with these trucks.. At least the drive train (Cummins that is) is decent, made it to 373,800 thus far.

I have the same problem. I was blaming my column-mounted gauge pod as it sounds like it's a plastic on plastic noise. But, I don't think it's the gauge pod, so no clue. I haven't dug into it yet. Hopefully someone will find the cause.
