Hi all, a short time back I had the rear brakes replaced. Shortly after wards, I noticed a clicking sound from the rear. Its not always there either. Any ideas?

It could be an out of round drum hitting a high spot on the shoes.

It might be a piece of loose hardware floating around inside the drum.

It could be a pices of gravel caught in the thread of a tire. (my thoughts with you saying it is intermitment).

A bearing with a bad spot on it.

Does the sound get worse with a load on the truck?

Does the sound change with throttle position?

Does this sound stop suddenly when the trans changes gear?

Do you have aftermarket wheels that have centercaps to cover the rear hubs? There are usually little lock tabs on the backside of them that seat on the hub so the centercap doesn't rattle around. If they get flattened out, the centercap can move enough to make an annoying clicking sound. I had this happen on a couple of different trucks. The way I found it was to put the rear up on jackstands and have someone else run the truck in gear and spin up the rear wheels while I listened from outside.

Cheers,

Sean

Looks like I'm destined to pull the axle. Split my fore head open over the weekend on the truck, can't wait to see where the blood will come from this weekend. My wife says that if I ain't bleeding then I'm not haveing fun. Jeeze, I get no respect;)

Well shoot you have ruled out the easy/cheap fixes. Sounds like you need to pull it down and do some looking.

You are supposed to keep you head at arms length from the truck at all times. :p

Does the sound change when you apply the brakes?

That might help you decide if an out-of-round drum.

Or did you replace drums? I had some problems when a new drum wasn't properly seated on the hub...

To piggy back off this post... ... ... I heard a clicking from back aft this weekend also..... the camper was on the truck (3000 lbs) when I heard it. It didn't change with braking; it increase with truck speed and was constant while shifting (rules out drive train). Zero rear end work has been done to the truck.

I hadn't heard it last week with the camper off the truck... ... . I'm thinking that it is weight related:confused: ?? I'm pulling the camper tonight and will reply on the out come... .....

Jeff, was weight a factor in your noise do you think??

Rich

Andy, I didn't replace the drum but had it turned.

Phillip,

Sometimes you just got to get in there real close to get a good look-see. And thats usually when something jumps out and bits ya:eek:
