I thought I had (another) u-joint going bad... very slight vibration at highway speed. It's something I would notice driving it every day, but nobody else would. So, with new Spicer in hand, I expected to feel a looseness in the u-joint (rear) as I turned it by hand. What I found though, was both u-joints seem solid, BUT there is a kind of random "ticking" in the output housing of the transfer case. The yoke also seems to have a lot of "slop" (movement) in the housing, but I don't really know how much there should be. The best I can describe the sound I'm hearing is like the randomness of a stone in a hubcap, but much smaller of course and it appears to be between the PTO cover and the yoke.

The truck just turned 125K and is a '99 standard cab 4X4 with a five speed. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Ed

Are you at the tail shaft?? (rear half) That bearing is easy to get to, kinda sounds like a bearing, but maybey somthing in the t-case chain. If you dont have any luck stroll over to Duke's garage at toy rd and alum creek rd.

Look up rowilson here. He's down your way, and we can attest dukie is the man.

Sounds like the SNAP RING that holes the Out Put Shaft in place broke. Take the 4 bolts out of the tail case and slid it back. There should be a snap ring on the shaft at the bearing race. There should not be any movement in and out on the shaft.

It's the 241HD, so in addition to the four bolts, I'll need to also remove the *&##$%% snap ring through the access hole in the top of the case, right? I'm more worried about that than the rest of the repair.
