2012 Crew Cab short box G56 4x4.

Bought the truck 2 weeks used (replacing a 99 QC SB 5spd 4x4.) When I got home from work tonight, it smelled a little like hot oil around the truck, with audible cracks & pops that sounded like cooling metal (44 commute.) I figured that it was probably cooling off from a DPF regen. I figured I look under the hood to see if there was anything obvious.

And found something that I didn't find when I looked the truck over before I bought it. Passenger side over the exhaust near the EGR actuator, under the push/pull cable assembly I discovered a small coil spring hooked onto the bracket, but the other end apparently clipped off. I don't see the remnants of the other end anywhere. It does appear to be fixed firmly in place on the other end. See the attached pic.

Rather obviously, something doesn't look right. What am I missing?

The spring is attatched to the rivet directly behind the rear cable and on the bottom of the bracket. You should be able to feel the rivet and broken section.

<chuckle> Was in the dealership today for puddle lights. According to the mechanics, that spring is there to hold things together when the actuator assembly isn't mounted. During an EGR cleaning, they all clip that spring to keep things out of the way.
