2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Clunk or pop while turning?

I started getting a clunk or a pop while turning either way. It does it at lowspeeds like when I turn in to a drive or on a side street. Looked at the front end but haven't jacked it up yet. What should I look at first? I kinda feel it in my feet on the floor. Do the trailing arm bushings go out? The truck has 108K and 80% is highway miles. Still drives good (well good as it always has)

I just went through this issue. I had 130k on mine. First off check your track bar. This comes off of the top of the axle on the passenger side to the frame rail on the driver side the joint on the driver side wears out kinda like a tie rod. The there are your tie rods look them over well mine were really loose. DANGEROUSLY LOOSE then check your shock mounts. It is probably either tie rod ends or the track bar though. I got my stuff from thruren fabrication. www.thurenfabrication.com He has really good custom stuff pretty fair prices too. I just installed my steering setup this weekend. You have to drill out your steering knuckles and pitman arm to accept a 3/4 in. bolt but wow it is a really tough setup.

check the control arms. mine was doing the same thing. checking it was easy. all i had to do was put a lug wrench on and tourqe on the lugs and i cold hear it poping. the track bar is easy to check to. have somebody turn the stering wheel back and forth and watch for any movement. I have had zero luck finding just the bushings for the control arms, all i can find is the whole assmbly.

Check your front axle shaft u-joints. Look for rust colored dust coming from the caps.

Also you might want to check the sway bar end links. Mine were so bad that it also was causing a clunk when turning. Also I have seen the control arm bushings on Ebay in poly or ruber

Mine was doing that at 98k. It was the left front u-joint. What a PITA. You'll enjoy taking the hub off. Also, when you are putting the axle shaft back in, be really careful not to nick the axle seal. Mine is dripping now so I have to tear the whole thing apart again



I checked the u-joint by putting the front on jack stands, turning the wheel to lock, and spinning the tire. It was pop-pop-popping for me then.

Ball joints would be my guess... the bottom one is probably sliding back and forth...



Is it even coming from the front... could be the overload springs in the rear have gotten spun a little and are catching a bolt on the frame...

I've got it to

I had worn out ball joints and thought that was it. Replaced them and still have the clunk, pop. I don't have to drive just turn the steering wheel. I have a little play in th e track bar, I'll shim the Lukes link today to see if that helps. All the tie rod ends look good. looked at control arms no problem there. It's starting to drive me nut's. any help would be great.

I fixed mine

I shimed up the luke's link nice and tight and no more clunk :-laf . Now on to moving the lift pump
