I had a buddy drive mine up into my steep driveway on an angle while I lay alongside it and it's confirmed that it is indeed the overload springs hitting the perches. Additionally, in the cold, I find that the fold out rear floor will make noise if I hit a pothole infested road at the right speed even if both sides are snapped down. Seems like the cold brings out noises in just about every brand of vehicle.

I also have the same noise when I hit a decent bump or dip in the road. However, since my truck is a 2500 with no overload springs I have ruled them out as the culprit. I've also checked my spare and it is tight so now I am leaning towards the exhaust.

99% sure its the leaf springs. I had Helwig add ons to get the rear end up for a few days, took em off as they made the same noise even with moderate bumps like good railroad track crossings. Maybe air bags would help or if you can, slow down?

I had the same sound on mine... until I took the hitch off. Seems that there was just enough clearance that a speed bump would make it thump.

don't overlook the bottom spring in the spring pack. It will make contact on these types of bumps. Try jacking up the truck by the frame and installing some type of soft rubber. Trying to find a more permanent fix. I hope this helps. 03 2500 4x4 laramie qc

I have the same noise too. I always figured it was the trailer hitch insert bouncing around, as they are never totally tight inside the hitch...

Do people have the noise without anything in the hitch?

I have the same noise. My truck has a utility body and welding equipment, so there is plenty of weight. The clunk happens on sharp bumps even at low speeds. Big bumps, dips don't make a sound. As I was loading the equipment on the truck I watched the springs and the overloads just touched the bump stops. I thought when I hit a sharp bump the rear would drop and on the return would smack the bump stop,so I added two extra leaves on each side. It still clunks but the stops could be hitting on the way down now.

So I don't think that it is the overloads because mine does it totally empty over small bumps. It doesn't really make a sound over larger bumps just sharp quick bumps. I hooked up the horse trailer and hauled some weight around that did push down the rear end a little didn't change anything. I will keep looking

Mine does it too ??????Have not figured it out yet. I know it is not the spare as I just tok the stock spare out and replaced with a 315 spare.

Okay guys was underneath my truck for sometime on Saturday. The rubber isolator that supports the driveshaft. If you yank on the shaft you can see it move inside that rubber isolator and with a sharp enough jolt it makes noise and that's just me yanking on it. Everything else under the truck was tight. What are your thoughts?

I don't know if I have the clunk (you are talking about) or not, but I can hear those plastic rear fender liners flopping around back there.

Do all you guys have sliding rear windows? I know those things move around alot.

Good luck,

Dave

As has been already confirmed... ... ... . it its the overload springs. Some strategically placed rubber from an old tire ought to fix it.

That's strange to me, I was on the overloads during the weekend and it still made the sound over sharp bumps.

I was worried about the driveshaft, I've seen the thread about it having some play in it and causing a noise. So you were able to move it by hand? I grabbed a hold of mine and I couldn't get it to move at all. I tried at the output of the t-Case because that was where the other thread discussed the loose shaft. I need to look more closely, I guess.

Anyway is there any 2x4 out there having this noise?

anyone have th nav radio yet?

Picked up my ram 04 2500 SRW Laramie 3. 73 Limited Slip 5. 9 SO Cummins two weeks ago! And got the navigation option! well worth the money... Was wondering if alot these trucks have this option? I seen a topic on the clunk in/under the bed! I am experiencing it too! Very happy with the truck! only 600 Miles on the ODO and 27 Hours. averaging 15. 5 mpg easy driving / mostly

city some highway.

It is the springs coming to a stop against the stoppers. With or without overload springs

100% positive

Was driving me crazy until I added air bags and it is totally gone just like that

Spent a dozen trips under her prior looking and looking

So has anyone found a good fix for this? It is the only thing that annoys me about my truck at the moment. Would better shocks help? Does it still happen with the T-Rex systems or even a lift kit?

I think you're on target with the hitch thing

I agree that it is probably the hitch. I've pretty much quit worrying about it (still in the strawberry patch on the warranty) but I did grab the hitch by the ball and rattle it. It sounded just like the clunk I get on the sharp bumps. I'm too lazy to do it now, but sometime I'm going to remove the hitch and see if the sound goes away. If it does I think a piece of old innertube wrapped around the slide would keep it tight and probably reduce stress on the receiver since it won't be moving around and putting pressure on the welds.
