Clunking in the transfer case to d-shaft

For some time now I have a clunk, clunk in my driveshaft coming out of the transfer case. (Almost sounds like when a univeral joint is going). I have replaced them (U-Joints) because they did need it but sound is still there. I can turn d-shaft back and forth a little when in park and it does looks as though the transfer case shaft is a little loose. Any known fixes for this? I have the NP-205 case, does it have a chain inside to the gears? Would that be getting loose like a timing chain in a car? Would it need to be taken off the truck to look at, fix, rebuild. I just have noticed it is getting louder over the summer then it did last year. Winter is starting and hate to have it blow in the middle of it. I don't tow or haul so it is mostly my itching foot that has caused this to happen... GIVE ME MORE POWER SCOTTIE...

According to the Service Manual the NP 205 has no chain.

Drop the driveshafts from the t case. Check the yokes themselves for slop, especially side to side movement. When you tighten down the yokes, this sets bearing preload. Bad or loose bearings can cause this clunk. Check your shop manual for torque specs, typically in the 130/150 ft/lb range.

Komual has the right idea. If it helps, my
transfer is also very noisy, more so in the
summer (warm temps thin oil). My transfer
noise was caused by loose yoke at rear driv-
shaft. I have had the noise for over 40
thousand miles. That NP205 is a strong case!

Guys, I guess none of you have ever driven any Dodge truck of any year (especially Ramchargers) with the 205 case. You will get the clunk any time especially going right into reverse from drive. The 205 is gear to gear and is indeed a tough box, the clunk is the backlash in the gears. If it were a wimpy chain deal like the newer trucks, you would'nt hear it. However checking out the yokes/ nuts and such is a good idea.
