Steering Column Clunking Found!!

Help! I keep getting a "clunking" noise when I turn a corner. It used to be just in a left turn, now it's in both. I tried to do a search (3 times) because I remember seeing this posted before, but to no avail. I'd like to be able to describe somtheing more to the dealer than "clunking". :(

Sounds like it might be your front axle u-joints.

When I would turn sharply to the right, I would get a rapid clunking noise. I also had a front axle seal leaking, so I replace both axle seals, both u-joints and since they had it torn apart, I had them replace all 4 ball joint (no zerk fittings) with Moog ball joints with zerk fittings. Leak and clunking noise gone.

I had a noise only when turning, slowly got worse over time and would vary with the weather. I got a new track bar under warrenty, problem solved.

Mine had that same sound. To resolve the problem I added another bottle of friction modifyer and the problem went away.

I see you changed your diff. Did you add any friction modifyer?

Can you also feel it in the steering wheel when it happens? If so, I'd also bet it is the trackbar. Mine was replaced at about 25k.

Clunk

I'm with ftb87. Is your rear diff limited slip?

I have the clunk too but I'm not going to put anything in there to make my limited slip more slippery:)

Guys; Yes, I have limited slip, and I did add 8 oz. of friction modifier when I changed over to the synthetic. For the one week I had conventional 80w-90 in the diff, I did not have the modifier in. I knew I would be changing it to the synthetic shortly and couldn't see wasting the $10 for the modifier for 1 week's time. The clunking is clearly from the front though, at least, that's where I'm hearing it. It has been there for a short while, but getting progressively worse. I can't really say that I can feel it... . I have had the track bar bushings replaced, but I'm taking it in armed with a list of things you all have mentioned for them to inspect. I'm can't get it in until next Monday though, so if anyone else has any ideas or suggestions, they'll be appreciated. Thanks again.

Just got my 99 back from dealer. It also had clunk in steering. I could feel mine when going straight but it was worse when turning. Diagnosis was a bad intermidiate shaft going to steering box and also a worn tie rod end. Replaced both and solved the problem. Good luck.
