Clutch Change and 6-speed Amsoil Fluid

I am going to install my SBC this weekend, and want to change the transmission fluid to amsoil. I need to know what kind is ok to run in the 6-speed.

Use the Series 3000 5W30 Amsoil. Its been in my 6spd. for 150K now, and no problems.

I am also using the Amsoil 5W30 but haven't had it in for long. I am going to run it 30K and then sample it to see how it is doing.



Draining the fluid before R & R-ing the transmission isn't a bad idea, although when I had my SBC installed a week ago not much oil leaked out through the tailshaft hole.



Are you thinking of having the SBC put in or doing it yourself? I wouldn't recommend trying it on your own unless you have a good transmission jack and have R & R'd a few transmissions. That 6 speed is huge and around 350lbs if I remember right, plus they had to remove the crossmember to get it out (had difficulty removing the X-member). Total cost to get the job done including flywheel machining was under $300.

I've already had this transmission out and back in once. The first time was on my back in South Bends shop, so I know what to expect. What a blast that day was!! I am going to do it in a shop with a hoist and a pedestal transmission jack and lots of extra hands. The transmission jack is heavy duty enough for the job. Ive also got a porta power lined up for the cross member. A bottle jack is not designed to work sideways, at least the ones I own. The would't stay extended.

I am going to take it out on friday nite, get the flywheel machined sat. morning, and hope to be rolling down the road sat. by noon. It took about 8 hours last time, i'm shooting for about 5 this time around.

Hopefully all goes well, and no suprises jump out.

What mileage did you put the synthetic in at? How is cold (or hot) weather shifting? I've been wanting to switch to synthetic but since MTX = warranty and ANYTHING ELSE = no warranty I've been too skeered ( Texan for "scared" ) to experiment. You're the longest run with synthetic that I know of so far. Have you ever had it analyzed? Would be nice to do an analysis with MTX and then one with synthetic motor oil, hmmm, I might do that.

TD, I put the 5W30 in at 29K, when dlr. put new transmission in, changed it at 104K(75K) and Kurt put Fast Coolers on at 163K(59K). I never had it analyzed, but it has always looked good, in fact Kurt said he wished he would have saved it and put it in his trk. , cause it looked as good as the new oil we put in. Lets see,,, 29K to 175K(now) I guese thats 146K, almost 150K. I've run in -10* to 112*, and no problems. I might have it analyzed the next time I change it.

yogibear, thats very encouraging information, given the price of MTX, I'll probably follow your lead. BTW, I was told by my Texaco distrubutor that Texaco is not going to be producing MTX anymore

( might be just a rumor ). One thing for certain, they no longer offer it in 5 gallon pails soooooo, 5w-30 here we come ( at change time). It would stand to reason that if 5w-30 synthetic was doing *any* harm to your 5600 it would have shown up by now. Thanks

Don't sweat the warranty, Amsoil will back you up, but you won't have any trouble anyway.

I had the Amsoil 5W-30 HDD oil in my 6 speed analyzed after 22,000 miles of use. Everything looked good. The only concern I had was the viscosity had sheared from 11. 5 centistokes out of the bottle to 7. 7 centistokes. The transmission still shifts great in all temperatures but the loss in viscosity leads me to believe the lube in these transmissions needs to be changed every 20 to 30 thousand miles. The addition of Fast Coolers is on my bombing list as well.
