I have a '91 non-IC with a '97 NV4500 swapped into it already by the previous owner. It clearly has an Advance Adapters bellhousing (p/n 71584).

I need to replace the clutch, do I get an '89-'93 clutch, or an '94-(?) clutch? The current pressure plate has a very heavy cast housing, if that helps.

Also, If I needed to replace the flywheel or starter, which year would I buy for?

If it is using the AA flywheel housing (adapter), then it is a stock Sachs clutch. Any 89-93 clutch will work. I highly recommend finding a Sachs clutch just like the one that is in there. It is a very good, long lasting clutch for mild to moderate power. The starter wouldn't have been changed from stock nor would the flywheel. I would recommend a ball bearing pilot bearing instead of the stock bronze piece.

Thanks. I just did some searching on Sachs, that does appear to be what I have and it does sound like a good clutch. There really is nothing wrong my current clutch, I have it apart because I'm transplanting the drivetrain into my '75 and I wanted to inspect it. However, there appears to be only about 1/32" of material left on the clutch before the rivets contact the flywheel or pressure plate.

If I order a rebuilt clutch at the parts store, will it be a Sachs? Is there somewhere I can send my clutch and pressure plate to get rebuilt?

BTW, plans for the truck include mild power upgrades and sometimes towing 7-10k lb trailers.

why not just replace the linings yourself. They are available and still being produced. I believe they were originaly supplied by raybestos

napa can look up the pn for your clutch disk

Although I have never done linings on a clutch disk, I would imagine you will need to remove the old, and re rivet in the new ones with the rivet tool and viola. I have replaced brake linings on aircraft and it is very straight fwd to re rivet the linings in. Just make sure you have some extra rivets incase you split one.

Mysteryman, are you out there? He was who suggested this procedure. With a resurfaced flywheel and pressure plate and new linings you'd be as good as new. If it is cheaper than 400 US , it is cheaper than buying a whole new unit, + the cost of a good flywheel resurfacing.

The sachs has prove to me a very reliable unit. I'm running a little more then the numbers in my signature, and tow upwards of 29,000# gross, and the clutch has held great. I will caution you, that it won't engage when slipped under load, ie, truck pulling, brake stands in 2nd gear, etc :-laf trust me, I've tried it... .....

Here in Iowa, I bought a sachs clutch through Inland Truck parts. Any medium/heavy duty truck place should be able to get that clutch for you. For the sake of conversaion, I'd talk with Peter at South Bend Clutch, he could probably rebuild it for you, as they build clutchs.

Glad to see you on here, Mr Larson. We've discussed many times over on RCC, and the Pirate.

Clutch for NV4500 swap

I got a LUK ProGold in my 92 nv4500 swap works great comes with every thing you need

I got it at six states in Portland , but i think they have a utah store

for $330. 00 for a 92 Dodge , but its the same unit in burb conversion

for a 97

Do we really want to go down the ProGold road again? I am glad it works for you, though, DVolk. You seem pleased with it.

There was a guy selling some on ebay still new in NIB. I haven't seen them in a while, but it's worth a look. I had a 90 with really high mileage that the disk was worn pretty bad on. The flywheel looked perfect and so did the pressure plate. There was a really tight budget so I took the disk to a local clutch shop and they relined it and I put it right back in. I think they charged me about 45 bucks. Truck has since had another 150k put on it with no issues. I don't recommend this, but it will work.

Sixstates claims to have brand new original Sachs clutch and pressure plate for $475. He did tell me they could reline the clutch for about $100, he also said he could rebuild the pressure plate but I didn't get a price.

What do you think?

I don't mind changing clutches, so if it was me I would reline the disk and go. That is as long as the pressure plate and flywheel are in good shape. I'd put a new pilot bearing and release bearing in no matter which way I went though.

My mistake, I called and clarified, they can only resurface the pressure plate, they cannot rebuild it. He said the diaphragm for this PP is no longer available. But I'll take it in and let them examine it next week to see how bad it is worn. Otherwise I'll just get the new kit, if it is a Sachs clutch like it should be.

Clutch for NV4500 swap

Im not trying to sell clutches , or any thing what they told me at

six states is that LuK was now the oem replacement clutch and supersedes the sachs , they have 3 diffrent upgrades on the luk clutches

from stock to performance , minei bought for towing not some race ride like some of you do i work the truck and dont need 700HP to do so if i need that much HP ill get out my 69Peterbilt with 500 plus HP to the ground smallcamed cummins to pull it for me but with my set up i can haul 9 bulls in a 7,000lb stock trailer with no problems , Why spend a 1,000. 00 for a pick up clutch ????

Maybe LuK had gotten their stuff straight in the last 5 years. This was in a near stock 92 (22psi boost w/ 12cm housing; stock injectors), pulling 10K up a 4-5% hill. It was also mid 2002. Clutch slipped it I got into it too much. Glad your experiences have been better.

Carquest had a brand new Sachs clutch kit (p/n W05-053) for a little over $500. They gave me a great deal so I bought one. It's new, not rebuilt, it says Sachs right on the pressure plate, and it includes the disk, cover, TO bearing, bushing and needle bearing, and alignment tool.
