Archived clutch hydraulic release

while pulling into my driveway in 1st gear, I pressed on the clutch and it went to the floor,while the truck kept on moving,I had to kill the ignition to stop it. I need to fix it now as this is my service truck. my question is, is this the clutch hydraulic release system that has failed and needs to be replaced as a system ? are the components serviceable ? or is this something completely different?

My truck is a 02,2500,6spd,4x4,160,000 mi.

Either the clutch release yoke fell off its pivot point or the hydraulic release system failed. If you can get under the truck and have someone push in the clutch pedal, see if the slave cylinder rod moves outward. You may be able to see the end of the yoke to see if it is in place. The release system is sold as a unit I believe although I have read of some aftermarket parts but don't know where they might be available. The clutch hydraulic release system is a sealed unit. There is no service. It comes in two pieces when you replace it. They connect with a fitting and are already bleed and pressurized. I have replaced mine once. A serviceable after market unit would be better if available.

Save yourself some effort, buy the Southbend complete unit. it cost 250$ and is worth every cent. i replaced mine about two weeks ago and took about and hour and a haft. it took me the longest to get the master cylinder to release off the fire wall. it was a little sticky. Careful of the clip on the clutch pedal it will brake easy if you force it,The Southbend unit is one piece and is made bettter than others i saw when i was shopping . Most southbend dealers will get it to you in a day or two. Not sure where your from but i got mine from MASSDiesel.

You might be able to "pump up" the clutch for a short while if you have to drive it. If you are going to go with OEM check the mopar4less price. Be sure to specify internet parts when you call.

The Ford one is a POS. You have to remove the transmission to replace it. The Dodge ones are great, except for the fact they have to be replaced as a whole unit. My '96 is original, driven hard, with 215,000 or so miles on it. I have no complaints.

I bought the complete assembly for my '98 service truck when I thought it had gone bad and the clutch would not release. Installed it and it did the same thing. Problem ended up being a seized pilot bearing. I bought the truck used and apparently the previous owner held the clutch pedal down at stop signs and red lights. The input shaft is cheesier on the after '96 trucks, in that the clutch end is ONLY supported by the pilot bearing. If the pilot bearing fails, it destroys the hub of the clutch which is then the only support for the end of the shaft.

I replaced mine with a SouthBend CON-OFE 13" diameter unit with the ball bearing pilot bearing and I love it. Have the same set up in my '96 and '98 work truck. Got them fro Peter at South bend.

Thanks that really helped out alot,I removed the slave cylinder and had my wife press the clutch and I could hold back the piston with my hands. It was kind of a pain to do not tech. at all,and it is kind of cheezy. I like the southbend idea and would have gone that route, but I had it the next day for $220. , another dealer near me quoted $270. and 5 days, so if you have time shop around.

Firehunter> I took your advise and ordered the Southbend hydraulic clutch linkage. It took several days to get to my home, but after I saw how much better it was quality wise, I was impressed. It was all a one piece sealed unit, and took me about 35 minutes to install it, and adjust it, and away I went. Thanks again.

Is the Southbend system serviceable? Can you bleed it, is it one piece or separate pieces, or is it similar to the factory set up?

It is a closed system. you do not have to bleed it after you put it on. It is capped on one end with two finger tabs that brake off and set itself into the clutch. you don't want to brake those off before you put it in because that is what is holding the pressure. Then it is ajustable behind the clutch pedal. If it brakes them i just assume you need to replace the whole system.
