I pulled my transmission and transfer case yesterday to change out my clutch and repair the fifth gear problem. I was kind of surprised that the back of the engine didn't drop down when i pulled everything out. Now I'm not sure how to slide the transmission/transfer case back in because there is not enough clearance with the floor of the cab. I tried jacking up the front of the engine but that didn't drop the rear of the engine down any.

I'm open to suggestions and looking for help from you guys that have done this before.

Will,

I just did mine in May and fortunately or unfortunately, I'm all too familiar with wrestling that thing back together.

Jacking on the front of the engine should give you enough angle to get things lined up. I had good luck with using both a transmission jack under the transmission and a floor jack under the rear of the t-case. This will allow you to raise the combination up and still change your angle of the unit with the floor jack in the back. Basically you will want to raise the transmission a little at a time until you get almost into position. From there, you will need to slide the unit forward until input shaft moves into the bell housing a slight bit to allow the top of the trans to move below the hole in the floor. Then you can raise the trans up until the top is in the hole in the floor, and then move the trans the rest of the way forward until the input shaft moves into the pressure plate and pilot bearing.

I would also suggest putting the trans in 4th or 5th and temporarily inserting the rear drive shaft before you attempt putting the input shaft into the pressure plate and pilot bearing. You can use the drive shaft to slightly rotate the input shaft to aid in lining up the splines. I just find that much easier than trying to turn the flywheel.

If you get into a bind (pardon the pun)... . shoot me a pm. I could possibly give you a hand if you need it. Good luck.

Cant help on the clearance issues, but if you run into trouble getting it all lined up, try taking the bellhousing off the engien and bolting it up to the transmission. I had to do that on my 91 recently, and after cussing a blue streak and giving up for the evening, I put the bellhousing on the transmission next AM, and it slid on slick as could be.

The exhaust is probably what is giving me the problems. I'll disconect that and we'll see what happens.

Now I have to wait for the new fifth gear nut to come. It was supposed to be here saturday, but didn't show up so hopefully it will come tomorrow.

Justin-If I run into problems i'll let you know, thanks.

Daniel-I didn't think about putting the bell housing on the transmission and then sliding it in. I'll have to see which is the easiest way to get it back together.

I think I recall Joe Donnelly recommending that the bell housing be dial indicated to the crank. Having not read this at the time, I did not when I replaced my clutch.
