Yippee I'll be on clutch number 5 here in a week. 122k miles. I'm beginning to think I need a bigger truck. (Okay I KNOW I need a bigger truck)

Honestly I just need a bigger truck. The Dodge may have a medium duty size engine, but it's not a medium duty size truck. I'm thinking about a Freightliner FL70.

South bend 13" upgrade. The bearings in the transmission were messed up, which messed up the pilot bearing and ended up putting stress on the clutch disk.

The clutch didn't break this time but I sent it back because the center seemed loose and they said they wouldn't reccomend putting it back in. So I ordered another disk and the kevlar bushing.

My transmission is being rebuilt right now so everything will be new and it should last a while now.

See, all the Mitchel fans should not be ready to pounce so fast. :p ;)

Transmission problems can hurt ANY clutch. Sled pulling max weight 40,000 lb 300 ft. at the end of the pull (periodically) does not compare to pulling 40,000 lb through the mountains 100,000 miles.

Just a thought, not a debate. The guy is just saying that he should probably be using a bigger truck for what he is trying to do and he is most likely right. These trucks are awesome but have their limits.

Holy Cripes

thats a load ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Guess I better re-consider moving that 80 acres of river property across the Rocky Mountains... ... ... ... ... ... ... . Dang it and I had it all loaded up on a trailer and ready to hook the all mighty CUMMINS up to it with my trustie S/B clutch to deliver the torque to the road... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Kevin:D

Peter,

Did not even know he was running a South Bend until further down the thread.

And yes, it is nice to have a pulling clutch that can be streeted and haul overweight loads!!!

Well the first clutch was stock of course. It broke around 70k, with about 35k of that being towing. The center completely broke out of it.

The second one was a Southbend Con O, it lasted 30k and the center completely broke out of it.

The third was some pos I put in just to get me rolling because I was hauling cars and had a deadline. I think they said something about it being a V10 clutch. Anyway it's the only cheap one I could find (didn't want to pay $600 for a stock clutch). This one lasted all of about 600 miles. It didn't completely fail but I could tell it was going so I put it in 4th gear and drove home at 60mph. The center had started coming apart.

Fourth one was the Southbend 13" upgrade. It didn't completely fail but the center was starting to go.

So now I'm to the fifth one which is the same 13" and I have a good as new transmission and the kevlar pilot bushing. We'll see how it does.
