Twice in the past week after sitting at a light, I let out the clutch to go and the grab point was 1-2 inches closer to the floor than normal. It was very disconcerting because the clutch grabbed sooner than I'm used to and the truck 'leaped off the line', so to speak. I believe this happened both times when I held the clutch down for a minute or two, but my usual MO is to put it in neutral and pop the clutch while waiting. By the time I get to the next gear when this happens, the grab point is back to normal. What's the matter and how long do I have til it's stuck by the road?

One other thing I've noticed over the past 6 months or more is after being in neutral with the clutch engaged for a few minutes, sometimes it is harder to get into 1st or 2nd gear (2nd is my normal starting gear when not loaded).

- '99 5-speed manual
- 110k miles
- Never had transmission problems before

Thanks for any advice,
Sam

I`ve had that happen too. Ended up replacing the clutch hydralics. problem solved.

Hydro's shouldn't be erratic, BUT a failing pilot bearing can allow the needles to jam up one time and make it hard to get into gear and the next time line up semi-favorably. Also those hardened steel needles might have enough twist in them when they jam to start the engagement process early. The needle bearing has a steel outer shell, needles and a seperator cage. If the cage has deteriorated then the needles jam up and become your new gremlin for the day. They can also damage the nose of the input shaft, can you say extra $$$ possibly if it gets serious.

Good luck

Hydrawlic leak down. when you sit at a light you should not sit with the clutch disengaged as the throw out brg only has so long of a life when loaded lengthen the life by putting the trans in nutral and let the clutch out.
