Hi all, just discovered problem 2nd gen. 96 3500 5 speed US gear under back of transmission Gear Vender back of transfer case, coming home Sunday going down a long grade pushed on the exhaust brake and when the RPM drop down, shifted to 3rd to get a better speed reduction, felt a shutter clutch? ( pulling boat 30Ft with 3 axle 5 wheel set up 18,000. or so. today attempted to stick boat in to shed not going back will go forward?

Aside from any comments about shoving it into 3rd for better braking, a clutch has no idea if you selected 1st N or REV. It either turns the input shaft or it doesn't on your control. So if it can move the truck at all, ain't the clutch.

Brakes is a whole lot more effective at braking and cheaper to R&R than a clutch.

If I recall correctly a previous member who had a GV told me he had to shift to direct in order to use his exhaust brake. He broke his GV a couple times to learn the lesson. His was in a '96 2WD.

Well I stand corrected if I only screw one thing up per year, thing are good, time to get under that thing and see what's happening. I will post when I have the answer, if it is the GV its less $$$ then a clutch.

And while you're checking things out, time to make sure the brakes on the trailer are actually working. I mean proof. Check wires and connections, adjustment, controller, braking using slider only as test and my go to tool for brakes actually working the IR temp gun. Look for heat, similar temps drum to drum. Braking makes heat, no heat? they ain't brakes.

I've got brakes on my rig, Dexter 4 piston discs. They know how to make heat when I need 'em too.

I agree that electric brakes have more problems then Hyd. I will be going there its a $$$ thig I have Dexter 3 Axles and need to go to stainless disks and there proud of them.
