clutch question

i was recovering a small boat (16' jon boat) with 2 adults in it from the river bank yesterday and noticed a slight burning smell. have smelled it before from other 4x4's when slipping the clutch hard but hell the pressure plates weren't even near stressed this time. anyone else have this problem? i mean, this was an easy no strain tow. up the bank and onto level ground. thanks
