While I have my trans out, I may look at the clutch and see how bad it is. If I get by with just a rebuild kit on the getrag, I may put one in. Peter at SBC recommended the MU 0090 Rally series, I told him I had plans up to 350 hp or so.

If I do or don't replace it I will need a throwout bearing, any certain one better than the other? Anything else I need to think about, or get?

Thanks, Steve

clutch

If you take the clutch out by all means at least relube the pilot bearing. I didn't and the brg failed about 20k miles later. If you are planning any serious power up grades you could put off the clutch till then and do a NV4500 all at the same time. Fwd and power upgrades will almost certainly demand the heavier transmission.

Actually the 4500 has no bigger overdrive gear than the Getrag but the countershaft bearings are bigger. Input and main shaft bearings are similar and the pocket bearing is altogether different. Even though I am much in favor of the Getrag, I recognize that the fwd along with boosted horse power may load them beyond their capacity. If you keep a close eye on the condition of the Getrag and don't let the countershaft bearings kill it, it will run a long long time. Just not as long as the Cummins without some attention.

Still want to know just exactly what the problem is in the transmission.

I just finished a Getrag/NV4500 conversion, and bought everything from Blumenthals. I was "talked into" a LUK clutch, and the when i took it for the maiden voyage the clutch slipped BIG TIME !! After calling Blumenthals, and SBC i was told there is a break-in period. I've never heard of this, and several other people i know have never heard of this. They told me to run it for a while, and see what happens... Now it seems the clutch isn't slipping as bad,but i'm concerned about future horsepower upgrades. The clutch is supposed to hold 400 hp. :rolleyes:I used to run a ceramic disc clutch in my old "street puller" and it worked great . I'm thinking of going with a SBC con fe.

Steve,

I'd say if you're looking to up the power, and pull a load at the same time, you may want to take a look at the SB ConO. I can tell you that the new Sachs clutches are not built like the old ones. The clutch disc and pressure plate in my truck were stamped "Made in West Germany. " When I bought new ones, the disc was stamped "Made in China" and the pressure plate was stamped "Made in Mexico. " Needless to say, the new Sachs didn't hold the power for squat and I ended up putting the original one back in. I figure the original will make it to at least 300k before needing replacement.

I would go for the Con O. "350" or so, will most definately come out to be more. Mike Dorsey is running a Con O at 450hp and it only slips enough to notice and not often.

When I get a new clutch, it will be a Con O.

It'll be a long time before I get up that high:( A couple years at least. Gotta get through college first.

I seriously can't say how far I want to go with it, anywhere from 250-400hp. Hard to decide.

Thanks, Steve

Excessive Force,

Ditto on the LuK. Not a good replacement for even stock applications. SOmetimes it feels like my clutch is slipping, but havent noticed anything smelling hot. The LuK that went into the 92 W250 slipped anytime I tried to pull 10K over a small hill and keep speed. It has a smaller friction surface, and the new one was a little THINNER than the stock one with 230K+ I was not impressed at all. I still have the stock Sachs clutch in my garage- WD40 on the pressure plate and all other metal surfaces.

If it looks like I'll ever need a clutch (after I get intersooled and bost fuelling?), I think I'll call SBC. If they are anything like the other TDR vendors, it's well worthe the extra trouble to get one from out of state.

South Bend is the way to go.

Greetings,

I just had a South Bend clutch put in while the trans and tcase were being rebuilt. It works perfectly!!! No more slip, no more clutch shudder - even in reverse! It is really nice to find a product that is all people say it is and south bend is! For the extra $150 bucks you will get a product that WORKS.

Don't skimp here - as you know it is a lot of work to replace.
