I have had my truck for about 10 weeks, I have 22,000 miles on it already. I'm noticing a "choppy" clutch, especially in reverse. I think I may have put a burn mark in it. I pull a large trailer and parked on a very steep hill once and it smoked going backwards. I kind of think "fat chance on a warrenty" but I thought I'd askk an opinion. Also, I'm about to add a TST box, think this clutch will stand up to it for long?

I personally think these trucks have the incorrect gearing in reverse... and the wrong friction is used on the discs..... I own several of these trucks and have trouble backing all of them... . we usually put our trucks into low range to back up... especially with a very heavy load... once the disc is damaged its hard to solve unless you change the disc... Once the disc glazes up... your done with... . so to speak...

We try to get customers to let the truck idle, engage the clutch and slowly add power... without slipping the disc...

Hopes this helps... oh BTW, its not much better with the 4:10 rear end... .

I bought an early 04. 5 and beleive I ended up with the weak springs, that they had problems with in the 03 clutches. They replaced the clutch at 6000 miles under warranty but had to wait a week to get the ok from STAR. I could hear the springs rattle when cold on start up. Almost sounded like a flat spot on the pilot bearing. I probably should of installed a Southbend then.

Agreed. At 110K I can't hardly back up on level ground w/o going to low. I haven't liked this clutch since it was new (stock). Can't wait to it to finally go byebye. Although I can't complain too much. Extra power (Juice) and heavy loads and it's still kickin'.
