I have a 96 4x4 3500 5sp that sometimes does not release the clutch. By that I mean when I push the clutch in nothing happens. I can not shift gears. Sometimes it starts working again right away and other times I have to turn the engine off and put it in gear and then it works. When I'm underway I have to float the gears without the use the clutch. I only have 322000 on this truck and it should not be acting this way. Has anyone had this problem?

You could check to see if your slave cylinder is working. It is external (pipe with hard line sticking out of driverside middle of bell housing) and with the removal of a couple bolts you could have someone depress your clutch pedal and verify the slave is doing its thing.

It might also be possible your pilot bushing worn to the point it is interferring with clutch dissengagement. They get rusty pretty bad and fail shortly their after. Need to pull trans the check that one.

Others will have better advise Im sure.

Seriously, with that kind of milage (how many on the clutch?)I would suspect the following based on experience with other (non cummins) vehicles.
worn pilot bushing
worn splines on input shaft
worn splines on clutch disc
corrosion (rust) on splines causing sticktion
old oil (leaked) on to splines (sticktion)
input shaft bearing worn
throwout bearing corroded/sticking
When you take it apart to check it, allow time to repair the worst of the above problems. Replace the clutch disc since you have it apart. CLOSELY inspect everthing until you find the source. If it is the input shaft bearing (which may get taken out driving with a bad pilot bushing), you can damage the trans if you drive it too long. I saw a post awhile back about kevlar pilot bushings that claimed very low wear rates-might want to check out.
Good Luck

Will stake my snap on tools on the fact it is the pilot bearing. A VERY common problem.
The little needle bearing wear and the cage come's apart and the piece's crawl up on the input shaft and locks the input shaft to the crank---How to over come --you guessed ,turn off ing. put in gear and re-start.
At first it may release (loose piece's) but one day locks and never to release again.
South Bend Clutch 219-256 5064 has the bushing that will end this once and for all.
Also (from a horse's mouth) will be in the 2002 , vie the clutch OE mfg. You can say you heard it here first. Call them and talk to them.
