Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) clutches: aftermarket or OEM

The clutch in my '02 is OEM and soft and I want to find out about what clutches are on the market, what are some after market clutch brands or should I replace it with a OEM??

South Bend clutches seem to be the choice on this forum.

How much power is the truck making? Do you tow? If so, how heavy? You should fill in your signature.

I purchased mine from Valaire , no problems or complaints. You might want to consider replacing the hydraulics when you are doing the clutch , get the heavy duty setup from SBC . I had to do mine about a month after I changed the clutch and pressure plate #@$%!:{ . The original might have failed if I had the stock pressure plate in anyway , there was around 180k on it . Anyway if I had to do it again I would suggest ordering the whole setup from SBC , one stop shopping (hydraulics, pressure plate, clutch plate, bronze pilot bushing) the original roller bearing was the cause of my troubles. Don't forget new screws for flywheel, and pressure plate.

The following questions would be helpful, if you could answer them.



1. Does it slip under load?

2. Does it release cleanly to allow gear selection without grinding?

3. Does it chatter during 1st and Rev engagements?

4. Any up or down shifting issues?

5. Mileage on current clutch?



It would help if you could tell us about your truck, current mods, future mods, typical usage, loads, etc.



Sometimes it's like picking out a new pair of hunting boots, tell us what you hunt, where and how often, the wrong boots can ruin your day or the right ones can make it.



Soft pedal, think about it from the OE point of view, they have to design for the large (Gross Seat Weight) male population down to the petit population, if momma can't drive it sometimes that a GREAT thing, sometimes, that's a real BAD thing.
