Well another topic here got me to wondering about this so I thought I'd start a new thread. I've shifted without the clutch on a few vehicles, once on a Getrag equipped Cummins Ram, but not my new Ram yet. Any idea what kind of damage occures while learning this technique on a new transmission? I guess I just need to buck up and learn #ad

CJ, I have a '85 CJ that I trashed 2 input shaft bearings on doing the clutchless shift thing. No grinding, easy to shift, but still trashed the bearings. I'm not saying that it will happen on any other transmission. Just giving my experience.

Damage? Don't know, but my '99 had 14k miles when I traded it in and my '00 nw has over 30k miles and I clutchless shifted both all the time. transmission is still together.

Mike Patton of Std. Trans. told me it is a very bad idea to shift without the clutch. The NV trannies are not built like big truck transmissions, more like oversized car trannies. The synchros have a clutch facing type material inside them. Use the clutch.

I HAD to shift without the clutch for 350 miles. The stocker quit disengaging.
3rd synchros went out. I have had to double clutch 3rd for the last 50,000.
Since they put that clutch in there, go ahead and use it!!!

Well you know I started thinking about this. It's one thing to drive an old four speed Ford or Chevy like that, those transmission's are easier to find and for alot less money too. I'd like to see how long I can drive this new Dodge. Currently, I hardly drive 10K miles a year, so if I don't get bored with it I may be driving it in 20 years when I retire.
