In the owners manual and the service manual, there is a notice that says in the case of a runaway engine, a dry chemical or CO2 extinguisher is used to shut it down. Heaven forbid this ever happen, but I like to be prepared for anything. I want CO2 so that the rest of the engine doesn't get clogged up with dry chemical when/if a turbo seal fails. I sized up a 5lb model that will stow inside the cab nicely, but I don't know if it would be enough to shut down 5. 9L of runaway engine.



Does anyone have experience with a runaway Dodge Cummins and how much CO2 extinguisher it takes?

A 5# should be plenty. You just have to blow more CO2 at the air intake than the motor can use until it stops turning. The other way to stop a runaway is a 2"X6", bowling ball, 1" plywood, ect. or whatever else is wide enough to cover the turbo inlet and is solid. A Spokane WA phone book will go right through an 8V71 Detroit blower. You will also get one hell of a hickey or worse if you try your hand or other body parts. The possibility of your Cummins running away are slim and you stopping it are even slimmer. It is a lot more likley that it would slowly pump the oil out of the tubo until the motor siezes, or you notice the smoke and stop. If the extinguisher doesn't stop the motor you can always ues the end of the bottle to plug the turbo inlet.

i hear the old-timers talk about diesel run away engines, but i have never heard of or seen a newer diesel of any type run away... i theory it can happen, but in real life i would say that your chances of using the extingusher to put out a electrical fire or engine fire of some type are much greater than ever needing it to stop a run-a-way engine.
 
I wonder about a pair of vise-grips to pinch the oil supply line? Might be a little scary with the engine running wild though. :eek:

My fire co. lost a CAT 3208 in one of our pumpers like this last year. I wasn't there when it happened, but they said that it ran almost 5 min before it started to shrapnel. It is a cab over, which takes three men and a little boy to tilt. They just were not able to get it up in time to do anything to stop it. I think that they were going to try the dry chem extinguisher method. But as jkern said, it just wasn't practical in that situation.

I was playing with the injection pump on my VW and made it run-away... . Luckily the ignition switch shut her down. :-laf



The tractor pulling crowd use the guillotine shutdowns... . just like most of the 2-stroke Detoits have on 'em.



An anonymous TDR member washed his engine one day... . He put a plastic bag over his BHAF to keep it dry... .



He forgot to take off the plastic bag and cranked it over. The BHAF was destroyed... . I'm not sure how long it ran... or if it stalled. Maybe if he's not too embarassed he'll fill us all in on what happened. :)
