I'm looking to buy a cb and from what others have posted, cobra seems the way to go. The specific model that I'm looking at is the 18 WX ST II Mobile CB

My questions are

#1, does this radio have the sound tracker feature when they say that it "Activates SoundTracker Noise Reduction System" or does this refer to something else, like a possible add on?

#2Those who have soundtracker, are you glad that you chose a radio wih that option?

I have the same radio. Yes it does have the SoundTracker Noise Reduction. It does limit the noise. Just don't expect too much form this $40 cb. It works for me as I only use it while in a bombvoy or traveling with others that have radios. Phil

We have two Cobra 18 radios. No weather band on these. One thing I don't like with them (don't if that one will be the same way), is that if you want it wired to turn off w/ key, it won't hold the channel you want it on. Always goes to ch. 9, unless it has a constant power source.

Not very powerful. No adjustments as far as RF gain, or Sound Tracker and a few others that most of the other radios have. The only radios that I have had electrical interference with (referring to the machine it is on, not other outside sources).

I use 2- Cobra 25s and 2- 29s (1 each w/night watch) . Like them much better.

The speaker on a 29 is on the bottom. (I'm not sure but I think most are)

As far as the Sound Tracker, my 75 has it but I keep it off. The ST makes things sound sort of odd IMO.

I got a 29 on eBay for $25 plus shipping and it's a great radio. There are a lot of them out there.

I also have the cobra 29ltd st, the soundtracker feature really only comes into play when you are talking to someone else with the soundtracker feature.

I've had a Cobra 18 WX ST II in my truck about 3 months. It works fine and I would recommend it as a good CB. It has the weather channels. The main reason I bought it was Corbra's have a good reputation and it had the speaker in the front. Like bmoller stated it will always turn on to Ch 9 if you do not have constant power run to it, that is the only thing I don't like about it.

OK, looks like I'll see if I can get my hands on one of those newer 29's. They look nice and the night watch would probably come in handy.

How is the power hooked up on these. Is there a special plug or is it just a wire coming out that you hook into 12v?

Thanks guys for your help :)

All Cobras have used, use the same style of removeable plug on the power cord (meaning the cord is removeable from radio).

One end has the connector on it that plugs into the radio and the other is just wire (and the fuse on the red wire) so you can do whatever on that end. Whether you want to use a connector to plug it into the cig. lighter or what not.

I only use my SoundTracker when I am in a large city with lots of CB traffic and I want to only hear people closer to my location. It will filter out weak signals, and since I am usually in rural areas, I leave the ST turned off. But nice to have I guess, but could live without it. A more important feature to me, living on a shipping port, is the weather band. I also use my Motorola trunking scanner to keep tabs on law enforcement, airport traffic (1/2 mile from my house is a small aircraft airport), and marine traffic.

Ah, I'll edit my post and say that the Cobra that I have is the 29 WX NW ST. I've mounted this radio in a few trucks, and now have it in my Ram. Still a great radio after years of use. I've gone through lots of antennas, though. Best antenna system I've ever had is what I have now. www.firestik.com

I have a Uniden PC78LTW that I picked up for 120-130 new from a local shop, tweaked. Built in SWR and weather. You can't monitor weather and the CB traffic, it's one or the other. You can set the weather alert on standby so you could listen to music or something. There are 6 or 7 weather channels so I can always find a clear one. The weather voice is clearer than the CB, not like those garbled little boxes can be. The night lighting is not as good as the Cobra. The knobs have plastic rings that light up but you still go by feel and knowing which knob is which. I use it on the job which involves a lot of slip seating.
