P1011 - Fuel Pump Delivery Pressure Too Low

Friend stuck in Utah right now, but she made it to her destination. She's a horse person and completely un-inclined mechanically. She's hauling a 4-horse gooseneck with one horse and living quarters. Truck has 150K+ miles, 6 speed transmission, Edge unit added on, EGR deleted. May have a screwdriver and crescent wrench.

Pulling a grade on the way into Evanston in 6th gear, CEL came on. Using the onboard "turn key to on" method, the 0087 fuel rail/system pressure low. Shhe downshifted to 5th, then to 4th and made the rest of the trip uneventfully.

My guess is that the fuel filter may be clogging or the fuel rail return spring may be getting weak. The in-tank lift pump was replaced about a year ago. My CTD is a 1996 12 valve, so my guess is a guess. Any thoughts?

For what it's worth, I have had the 6th gear-on-upgrades discussion with her many times. Overheating, damage to cylinders 5 & 6, poor fuel economy, too high EGT, and so on result from staying in 6th. Her response has always been that the truck always pulled the grades in 6th. I think that 150K of that kind of use has taken its toll.

Nothing wrong pulling a grade in 6th unless it won’t hold speed and starts to lug. The 6.7 can run much lower rpms than the 5.9 thanks to the displacement and VGT. It’s a different animal towing, but even then 6th was fine on grades with a 5.9.

As for the code start simple, fuel filter.

Does the edge have the ability to seen commanded vs actual rail pressure?
