wtburke,

I was just in the same boat you are. I was pulling the "P1693" out of my truck, but I also had a P0122. I took it to the dealer and all they had to replace was the Lift Pump. Might be the same case for you, however I would not recommend the dealer if you are out of warranty. I was out of warranty and I went to the dealer. Long story short, I got hit for $420. That i am told is almost double what any cummins certified shop can do them for.

hope this helps

WalterRyan ,

I got that same dealer impression from one of my customers that has moved up your way, sorry to hear that, but confirms my buddys impression. :(

The newest lift pump part number from Cummins is 5080885AA and from the most recent posts the price is around $130 to $150. I have not done the job yet but,I've looked at it closely and it shouldn't take more than an hour or so to complete.

Andrew I'm sorry you paid that much and Walter I believe you and I won't be visiting that Oroville dealership in the future.

I guess we need to find a reasonable dealer however, I must mention that the Chico dealer has a Dodge service writer who is not very bomb friendly he has been to BD school his name is Ken. Beware.

They do have an excellent Cummins guy on the floor his name is Billy, kind of a heavy set blond hair fella. He's very good and knows his stuff. It's too bad the service writer is such a wet rag.

Really guys... . we gotta be are "own warranty" facilities,,, it maybe time consuming but, it may keep our frustration levels in better check.

Update

Had the rig throw the same codes, now it's two weeks later. Took rig into Chico Dodge and they performed a "flow" test and says it passes? (Rig idles at less than 7psi NOW!) They say the issue is warranty of Power Train and there is no charge due to the code.

They also told me that the vehicle is under Warranty and that the Oroville Dodge dealership should not have charged me the 89 bux when first viewed.

I have been told there is nothing that can be done until the lift pump and VP-44 fail because there is no way to get the rig to duplicate the syndrome that locks the P0216 code.

I called the Oroville dealership and they say they always charge everyone a minimum of 89 bux regardless of warranty issues or not? I think I'm being skunked.

Boy... . I'm so very displeased with dealerships.

Guys... . DO NOT USE OROVILLE MOTORS DODGE... they have some major problems understanding 5yrs/100k miles.

William,I started having the same syptoms as yours. Started the truck Saturday morn, headed down the street and the MIL came on. Underload I have no power. It takes about 1/2 mile to get up to 50MPH. The truck has been running fine except for some surging and what seemed like some bogging when shifting gears versus a smooth acceleration. I dont have a scanner but Im scheduled to go to the dealer here in Corvallis Wednesday. I cannot understand how they can make the truck run better by just clearing the codes. My fuel pressure is fine and the filter is relatively new. Course Im on my 3rd LP. The first LP had intermittent pressure. In fact I was on a trip with the 5er and had to drive over 100 miles with 0 fuel pressure. The second LP just up and quit one day. I just hope they do something before there is a no run/start situation.

I have serious doubts that your truck would pass the flow test @ 7psi. If it were me I would run the test myself to see it first hand.

0216

WTBurke,

I had the same crap!

After 2 visits to 2 different dealers, I took it to Cummins to diagnose, they did and I called the Dealer and the Dealer picked it up and replaced the VP-44 under warranty.

Picked my truck up from the dealer today. Ended up being the MAP sensor. It must have been dieing a slow death because the truck hasnt run this good in a long time. In fact I dont think the sensor was right since new and that was 4 yrs and 47k miles ago. The boost will jump right up to 12-14 lbs quickly with only part throttle and it no longer has so much turbo lag on acceleration. Only drawback to the repair was the cost. The sensor is not covered under the 5 year/100k warranty. My next cash outlay will be for an OBDII reader.

Michael Brolin,

In many cases a failing map sensor will not set a code. What happens is that the ecm will not increase fueling because it is not seeing increase in boost. Having a scanner helps but it won't tell you everything. ;)

Called DC

I called DC on Tuesday while I was in the San Francisco bay area. I had no throttle response at about 53 mph. The 0216 and 1693 codes locked in again on Hi way 80 just outside of Concord. Codes were cleared last Friday April 2nd. The Chico Dodge dealer informed me that I would have to call the customer service desk back east. I did just that and I have a case number now. While I was on the phone with DC they placed me on hold and called the Chico dealership. The lady at DC informed me that the service manager informs her that my truck passed the flow test!

I told her that Cummins West Inc. of Redding California stated that the "test" Chico Dodge had performed is not what Cummins specs in this case. She informed me that Cummins has no say on how this is to be tested. Flow is now the standard and not PSI ! I believe both are important.

Basically I was told that until the vehicle is disabled completely that Dodge will do nothing.

Cummins West of Redding CA has sent me a new LP ($155) and I'll be installing it on Saturday morning and I'll clear my own codes with a DRB tool.

No one will tell me if the VP-44 has been damaged by intermittent PSI variations caused by the dying/dead LP. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

This is what happens to a guy that does not install gages... even though his fellow TDR members have all preached this as STEP 1.

Good news and bad news

Good news is that you can get it running again momentarily by putting the truck in neutral while you're going down the highway, or pressing the clutch, and letting the rpms drop to idle, then slowly bring it back up to normal speed again after a few seconds. This seems to reingage the injection pump, if only just for a little further.

Bad news is that it will only get worse, and your VP44 is most certainly dying a slow death, regardless of lift pump pressure (I have about 14-16psi WOT under all conditions with the FASS system).

I'm replacing my VP for the same symptoms and codes this weekend with a PDR hot rod version.

Skyler

I had the 0216 and 0253 codes (both pump codes) and symptoms similar to yours. Just had the vp44 replaced and all seems o. k. so far, but it's only been 25 miles or so since I got it back.

Michael Brolin,

I'd think that the MAPP sensor would be covered under both the engine warranty AND the emmision system warranty required by federal law. Last I knew the EPA required warranty was 8 years/80,000 miles.

Well here I am 5 thousand miles later and I've been through $tealerships from LA to SFO. It's bad as everyone knows. However the Chico Dealer looked at my rig this afternoon and of course the 0216 & 1693 codes were present. They say they will call STAR on my behalf and explain what they have found. (nothing different from before) They said because I've generated paper work up and down the coast of California that they might authorize a VP-44. WOW! this sure is different.

I have the "dead-peddle" the "hard start" after warm up and my codes have been cleared so many times I've lost count.

I hope to have a new VP soon..... and I will immediately modify the fuel delivery system in a substantial fashion.

This has not been fun... .

William:(

Yes Gary... these 01 and 02's are also in the stream of fuel problems. I neglected to install at least a fuel gage and now I'm paying the price and jumping through hoops. I do believe if one does not let his fuel pressure drop below 10 psi at WOT that one would stand a chance of not loosing a VP-44. I've studied the postings here on TDR for two years and any person who does not monitor the fuel delivery system on their CTD is allowing their own fate... . I'll know more tomorrow by noon if I'll receive a new VP-44.

William:rolleyes:

New VP-44!

WOW! I just received a call from Chico Dodge and STAR has given me the green light for a new pump. I know I made some noise at different Dealerships all over California for about a month or so. But, I thought it was going to take more than that and the last 4 thousand miles has been very scary. Limp-mode, dead-peddle and very hard starts were becoming the norm and warmer weather was an issue.

I drop the rig off today at noon. I leave for Texas on a bizz trip and won't return until June 12th. So... . I hope to have a more trouble free rig on my return.

My baby is gonna get fixed:)
