Here's the deal. My truck got the 0216 code this past Sunday. Took it to Carson Dodge service dept. They said the lift pump threw a code and they are replacing it.

0216 is for the injoctor pump. Why aren't they replacing it as well? They said "we don't know if the injector pump is damaged yet or not" but it wouldn't throw an 0216 if it wasn't right?

They also wanted $75 TO REPLACE JUST THE FUEL FILTER! WTF???

SAME PROBLEM

I had the same code. The dealer replaced the VP44 and the lift pump. It might help to tell them you have a drivability problem. Low power, black smoke, Etc.

When p2016 comes up you must first confirm the lift pump flow, pressure and restriction are with-in spec. The VP-44 can not advance fuel timing if the supply to it is not correct.

$75 is not that bad. What is 1/2 of your time worth? The Dodge price for the filter itself reflects how many hands that part goes through before you get it.

Bob. My dealer did all that when I took my truck in and said the lift pump volume "was within specs. " They then replaced the VP44. I had to twist their arm a bit to get them to also replace the L/P.

If 1/2 hour of my time was worth $75, I would have a much larger house!! If that is reasonable to you, I will do your work for you for $150. 00 an hour!

Would you pay $75 for someone to change your fule filter? I would rather go down the street to Cummins, buy the filter for whatever it is and do the work myself. I absolutely will not pay them $75 to do it for me. Maybe if they changed the oil at the same time but not for JUST the fuel filter!

I agree. That's why I told them I had just replaced the fuel filter the week prior, when actually I had done it 500 miles prior. I did not want to pay that kind of money for something I can do myself for the price of the filter. I knew the dealer would try to sell me a filter as part of their diagnosis.

The $ 75 did not include the filter? That is high if it was labor only. It is tough off out there,I guess I am spoiled... ..... I do all my own work and am not on your side of the fence. I have replaced over 70 vp-44's under warranty and so many lift pumps that I wouldn't want to guess at the numbers. How ever there are strict guidelines that dealers must go by. Many Cummins parts are restricted,to get the parts the tech must call the star center, wade through an endless menu to get to the correct department(Cummins) to give the test results to a Cummins rep employed by D/C to get authorization or he may be told to go back and do more testing before any parts will be shipped. The tech is NOT paid for HIS time on the phone,he does not get paid any base pay to come to work in the morning. Only the time D/C says the job is worth. How many people do you know that will work for free. I am not complaining but my best advice would be to find a good, caring tech and give him the respect he deserves and he will return that respect and get your truck back on the road as quick as possible, despite how D/C takes care of the tech. I try to talk to my customers directly, service advisors are salesman and may be a big part of the problem. Good luck with your truck and if you make it down this way maybe I can help you out;)

Bob,

It's not the tech that I have any issues with. I am a tech also and I know that the correct information from the customer does not always get to the tech doing the work. I also understand the red tape and hoops the techs have to go through to get the parts they need.

It was the service advisor that I had an issue with only. They did replace my lift pump and the truck does seem to run better now. Thank you for the offer. I was stationed at MCAS El Toro for 4 years so I don't think I will be making the trip down that way for a long, long time.
