I have code 0500. The service manual says, no vehicle speed sensor signal. From what I've researched this sensor is only on auto transmissions. Mine is the 235hp with 5spd manual. Any suggestions? The fuel mileage is also down from 15 town and 18hwy, to 13hwy and 10. 4 town. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bunyan

They all have the speed sensor (auto and manual). It's a tone ring and sensor in the rear differential. Usually that code is set from wheelspin or holding the throttle down while in neutral (poor man's high idle). Or I suppose it could actually be a bad sensor...

How's the cruise working? Has the ABS light made an appearance?

Cruise is working fine and no ABS or other warning indicators. Did have wheel spin getting through mud.

Bunyan,

Assuming you're speedometer is still working, then you may have simply had an intermittent connection to the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) which is located in the rear differential as mentioned in another post. You might start by clearing the trouble code using an OBDII code scanner and then seeing if it returns. If it does, then you should probably start by taking a look at the connector at the VSS to see if it's damaged. A rock could have hit it.

Also, sometimes the VSS itself can go bad. They are relatively inexpensive and can be found at any auto parts store.

There are a list of tests that can be performed to check out the VSS and the wiring harness. I can post those if needed.

If you have the time i would appreciate the things to check. . I also have this problem and dont know where to turn. It also comes up with a 1693 code. The check engine light comes on and the truck seems to lack power. I replaced the fuel filter today it ran fine but the codes still appear. What would i look into for that 0500? Btw its a 2001 3500 auto
