Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Code P-0123

ON my way to the Nor Cal Dyno Days yesterday my tuck through this code just as I was going over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Throttle/ throttle Position Sensor/switch A circuit high

I had an intermittent loss of power when accelerating, didn't seem to notice it happening as long as I was just cruising. I disconnected the batteries for about an hour and then re connected and checked for codes. . no code but check engine light was still lit !!

Had this code before and cleared it by recalibrating the APPS, now it's back

One of the guys in the club said that he had the same thing and changed out his batteries and that cured the problem. My batteries are the originals and the volys run at about 14. 5 according to my gauge in the truck?

Ran like crap all the way home from the dyno!!

I have searched the forums and found this to be a common problem but can't seem to find a PERMANENT fix? Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like either a bad TPS, or poor conection to it... I'd start by carefull unplugging the connector to the TPS, inspect and clean it, apply some dielectric sealant, and see if that helps - probably need to disconnect the batteries and clear the ECM - and then recalibrate the TPS after doing all the above...

Thanks Gary... just purchased some new Optima red tops and installed them today... no codes or check engine light yet!!

I will unplug and clean the TPS tomorrow.

back again

Took the wife out to breakfast and while accelerating onto the hwy on ramp it through this freakin code again

Gonna clean and grease the electrical connector right now... anyone else have any suggestions short of replacing the sensor?? If I have to go this route is it covered under the Cummins 5 year warranty??

you need to clean all the grounds. there are a lot of them. you may need a manual to find them more easily. important ones are the ones from the battery cables. just follow them from the batteries to where the are bolted on. if you have some type of electric motorized tool and a wire wheel ,that would make the job easier. when they are nice and shiny, apply some silecone grease to keep the corrosion down,

I had a similar problem. Received a similar code "low Apps voltage" dont remember the number, but was close to the 123 like you had. I only saw that code once along w/ the P1963. Started losing throttle response intermittantly as it would just drop to idle at any time. Ended up replacing the APPS, it cured the problem.



I had tried the dielectric grease, and it didnt fix the problem. It was the APPS im my case.

I cleaned everything I could get to on Monday... haven't had a chance to drive it for any distance to see if the code & problem come back.

I'm afraid that I may end up replacing the APPS after all.

There have been folks who have told me that there is alot of electrical interference in the wires from the alternator that can create a problem like this. Is there some way to isolate this interference?

dtt makes a noise filter that will cure the interfearence from the alternator.

Never mind, found out for myself on DTT website.

Looks like that might be a cheap insurance policy against any other electrical noise problems!
