I believe you just cycle the key on, off, on, off, and then on - codes should flash in odometer window.

You're in Jacksonville, huh? I grew up in Newport and went to school at the U of A (Fayetteville).

mongoose, I've not been able to retrieve codes on my '99 either. I've done a couple searches on this topic here and it appears this feature was added sometime between 1999 and 2000. Mine was manufactured 9/98. There is a running topic now in the products section about a Palm Pilot product from Cummins that is supposed be available in June that can read codes and a lot of real time engine info. from the ISB engines.

Hope this helps #ad

BTW, good lookin' truck. What tires are you running?

TxRam, i have been to and through Newport many times. They used to have some drag races there. I went to school at ASU Jonesboro, so it was on the way.

Work2Much, Thanks for the info on the palm pilot. will have to go back and read the post. guess i missed that one! I'm running 265 Wild Country tires. so far they have been pretty good. I've got about 7,000 miles on them now and rotated them twice. So far good even wear. thanks for the compliment on the truck.

Don't know why there's inconsistencies on why some 98. 5-99's don't do the code thing.
Anyway, you can't really rely on the limited and generic codes that the window displays... you really need to find the real code with a scan tool.

If you really want to see a cool feature, try this... .
Before turning the key on,push and hold down the trip odometer button for a few seconds. Keep holding the button, and turn the key to 'ON' (don't start the truck!),hold two more seconds and let it go. Watch your gauges for something cool (don't know of all 98. 5's and 99's will do it,but 00-01 will).

My 98. 5 will cycle the gauges, my friends 98 12v will also, pretty cool.
