Ok I had a problem with the check engine light I thought after I put the relay on for OD. I disconnected the battery cables and it turned off the engine light. Then I drove about 20 miles pulled into a store and when I came out to leave I started it and the engine light was back on. I ran the codes and I got-P PCU 1899, and 1693. Then P ECU 1693, and 0380. What gives??

Don't have my shop manual with me so I can not tell for sure... I know the 1693 is a general code that basically means noting really, as for the other one. . maybe some one on the board has there manual with em.....

I cleared the check engine light(disconect battery) and disonected the OD relay and then I dont get the check engine light:confused:  Then I checked the codes again and the "park nuetral switch failure is gone but the DTC detected and the intake air heater relay #1 are still there but they dont turn on the check engine light!

O.D. off relay..........

There was a post a while back on how to do it but the wire colors were different for my 01. I also fired the relay from the clutch kill switch. Seems the easiest way.

I dont know I just dont get it. I guess I have to go back to just manually turning it off:( I disconected the relay and no problem at all. It apperas to be the 1899 code that is setting the engine light ("park neutral switch failure") SUX

Wrong wire.......

Sounds like your grounding the wrong wire coming from the steering column. I would double check it against what the manual says for your year truck. That is about all it could be if it's effecting your park/neutral switch.

On my 01 it is the orange/white wire that needs to see the ground pulse.

If I were grounding the wrong wire it would not work and it works perfectly! It wont set the code till about the third or fourth time I start the truck other than that it functions perfect. :--)

I did everthing as you said and it still sets a code after three starts. I unhooked and have driven the truck for 2 days and it will not set that code. If I rehook it up it wil;l after three start cycles, I guess the computer stores them untill the third offense then turns on the check engine light. If I unhook the battery it looses the code (1899). I am a bit frustrated but I am %100 sure I have it hooked the same way you do. Thanks for your help

HTRDHLR,

Did you ever get this resolved? I just installed my OD relay this weekend and it seems that I have the same issue...

Here's the problem.......

I hope. Not to adept at reading the schematics in the manual. The clutch kill switch wire feeds thru to the park neutral switch. It looks like there is a resistor in there somewhere.

The only thing I can figure out is that the relay you guys are using is not diode protected. Meaning that the clutch kill wire is reading some resistance straight through the realay coil, or possibly getting some feedback when the field collapses. Either use a higher quality relay with a diode built in or put a diode in line to the clutch kill switch.

As the sourse for the 12volts to fire the relay is coming from the clutch kill switch put the band on the diode so it faces the relay.

If this doesn't cure the problem I'm really lost.

Good luck guys and let me know if it worked.

Garrett

Thanks Garrett, I will try that and see if that fixes the problem. I was thinking that the problem was along the lines that you described. The relay I used was a $8. 00 Radio Shack cheapy so you may be right.

Thanks for the input!

Jim

Thank you my Morton Grove friend. I put in a diode with the band towards the relay and it still sets the 1899 nuetral safety code:confused:

OK here's another attempt.....

Try the relay I used. It's super low draw 25ma which is almost nothing. It's made by Advanced Signaling, Arlington Texas.

If it still has a problem then it would have to be in your PN switch.

The switch has three terminals. Inside terminal is P or N and grounds to the transmission case.

The outside two are a switch for the reverse lights. Niether of these should ground. If for some reason the switch is slightly out of adjustment and it's now seeing a ground through the added relay when going into reverse that could cause the problem.

I'm just curious here, wish you guys were closer and I'd help trouble shoot it hands on.

Solution found.......

I want to thank Jweir & Htrdhlr for helping me trouble shoot the problem. I must have driven you guys nuts with theories.

Anyway. A high impedance coil is needed for the relay, I sent them ones like above and it fixed the problem. I got lucky as I picked this one because it had such a low draw to trigger it. With the lower impedance relay's the PCM was seeing ground through the relay and setting the code for Park/Neutral switch. It also disabled the cruise control as the PCM thought it was in park or neutral.
