Another filter question?

I did the dryer duct hose mod to my 05 and would do it again. ALL the test I've seen show NO HP increase with the after market air cleaners. No mater what, it is the most expensive HP you can do to your truck.

With the Edge Juice you can monitor the intake air temp. I also see about 10-15 higher than ambient intake temps under normal driving. I have seen as high 55 over ambient on a long pull at 19,500 GVW

I had a proguard 7 drop in in my stock air box for about 20,000 miles and have been on roads so dusty I had to stop and wait because I could not see. I was worried about filtration so I have pulled filter a few times and wiped the intake hose with a white cloth and have never had any dust or dirt of any kind. I think I'm going to do the PSM tube but at the bottom I might wrap a filter cover like they use on the bhaf filters just to make sure nothing big or rain gets sucked up.

I formerly used the BHAF filter on my '02, later switched to the current Amsoil/Donaldson 2510 Nanofilter element. I had used a "supplement", open weave cotton (old T-shirt!) as an inner liner between the OuterWears and the BHAF filter element, and it worked so well I am doing the same on the 2510. I am aware it might slightly reduce airflow, but so far, the Filter Minder is still on zero - as it always was on the BHAF. Here's a bit of a thread on that approach, for any interested in seeing the benefits:

For those concerned about too much dust getting into the engine with the aftermarket filters, I've been using an AFE Proguard-7 filtration system on my '03 since about 2004, now. The last four oil changes, I've done a used oil analysis & found that the silicon level was in the 4 to 5 range, which, is typical for a stock paper element filter. The last 3 changes were extended to the 9-10,000 mile range & I live is the desert Southwest (Phoenix), which, is pretty dusty.

My results show that the Proguard-7 works at least as well as a stock filter when it comes to filtration.

Just thought I'd pass this on to those that might be concerned about the filtering efficiency of these filters. I know that I was & that was part of the reasoning for used oil analysis.

55. . ?? I could see that with an aftermarket open filter but this makes me wonder where that increase is coming from with your system. Underhood heat is getting to the sensor somehow.

OK searching to figure out if I should get an air intake system as a first mod. Right now I run a stock replacement K&N air filter and from what I hear the home depot intake system seams to be the first place to start and then go with a programmer (thinking Smarty JR) and then the CF+ Air Horn.

To answer the question on road debre with the home depot method. there is a WIFE method. Use a nylon over the 4 Inch duct. When streatched it allows great air flow but will keep all the bug and stuff out, plus if your wife wears any they are free as I am sure she gets a run in one now and then.

Looks Like a run to Home depot and the wifes nylon drawer are the 'to do list'

+ it seems like it would be a good idea to cut an opening in the front air dam just forward of that hose inlet because air rushing below the air dam could be creating a small vacuum in that area.

what? huh?

i bought the S&B air intake and the only opening is to the fender... . i dont know how you have an opening on the bottom. strange. i bought the original from S&B and they replaced it with a new model. i am curious to what model you have? i mean, are you sure that it is the new model? just wondering.

I have the PSM mod and I think it does work as advertised. I also run the Amsoil stock replacement filter and have tot pulled the filterminder down significantly even with my Smarty on level 5. Maybe I haven't mashed it hard enough?

I looked at the PSM air box with the hose behind the bumper. The only concern I have about that is when we have hurricanes around here and I have to drive through standing water. It would suck water right into the motor. Other than those rare occurances it seems to be a great idea.

Oh, and if you drive on the beach, in the mud, or anything of that nature it would get clogged up really fast.

With the stock filter I am sucking the filterminder down just during normal driving, I am probably going to try the afe drop in filter and see how much that helps.

FWIW, Iv got a AMsoil dropin in my 05.

That is the only mod to the airsystem so far and I havent had any problem with sucking the filter minder down at all.

When I do the dryer mod, Im thinking about putting a screen over the opening to keep " junk" out of it.

I did the Home Depot cold air mod to my stock box and added a 90 degree elbo at the bottom just behind the front bumper and I am not injesting anything unusual. using AFE drop in.
