Greetings one and all,

In issue no 50 of our tdr mag. on page 86 their is a home made cold air intake system. Has anyone fabricated this set up for their truck yet? Did it work as stated ? Will this work on a '06? also on page 168 is a system being sold by psm manufacturing. Has anyone tried it, and what were your results?.

Thanks in advance.

RSeymon,

You can make your own (similar to PSM) for around $20. 00. Modifying your stock air box is simple. Then, I'd upgrade to the new Amsoil EaA air filter and your filter minder will never pull down again. If you have any questions, PM me.

I have the PSM mod and am using the AMSOIL drop-in filter. I also installed the Cool Blue Hose. I am very satisfied with these items. I immediately noticed a quicker spool up of the turbo, more go power at the pedal - actually takes less pedal now. I am seeing a 2-3mpg fuel increase as well. My dealership was supportive about this mod vrs all the other intake mods regarding possible warranty issues. Since the stock air box remains in place they do not see it as a mod. Good comprimise with good performance results.

This mod with the Amsoil Ae drop in air filter is the way to go. Far superior to the other expensive air boxes out there.

The DIY version is VERY cheap and easy. I went that route and I don't see how spending the money on the PSM version is any more effective.

amsoil filter

Thanks for all the replys so far.

Does anyone have a part no. for the amsoil air filter for a '06. When I decide which way I will go either build one my self or psm set up will put in amsoil filter.

CDonaldson,

Bear with me. My first time post and haven't a clue as to what I'm doing.

Do you have the patience to explain, to an old guy, the Turbo Air Guide and slincer ring functions and locations.

Thank you,

billjoh

Welcome to the gang. The TAG goes in the hose from air box to turbo. Silencer ring? I don't know. Someone chime in.

the silencer ring is actually IN the turbo, right on the outside of the compressor wheel. all that it comprises is a ring that quiets down the air rushing into the turbo. I tried to get mine out, but I couldn't, not enough room to see what I was doing, and I couldnt see for squat. If you want to remove it, most use 2 flathead screwdrivers or some O-ring pliers. Most will tell you that it really makes some noise if you remove it.

hope this helps

I googled Silencer Ring, and went to Wikkipedia as well. Basically as mentioned above, it just "silences" the turbo, it cuts down on the while. All I can figure is that someone complained to DC about the noise and this is what they came up with. It is simple to remove. I read the posts in here, grabbed a work light, a screw driver and a scribe and away I went. I removed the air tube from the air box to the turbo, then used the flathead screw driver to lift up one end of the snap ring holding the ring in place. Once I had an end free I hooked the scribe under it and slowly worked the scribe around the lip of the turbo until the snap ring popped out in my hands. After that I just grabbed the silencer ring and slid it out. I stil have it in my tool box incase I decide to put it back on but honestly I could hardly tell the difference (I have a stock truck except for the amsoil drop in air filter). The only time I can hear the turbo (more than before) is on cold days. My wife cant tell the difference, I actually had to explain to her, "see hon, the turbo is louder right now, hear it? thats because I took out that ring thingy I told you about".

She still cant tell any difference. The only reason I kept it out is that I am hoping there is a tiny increase in airflow into the turbo with the ring removed.

I have not noticed any appreciable increase in mileage or power with it out, just a little bit more noise from the turbo.

PSM air box mod

I just want to remind you that if you don't want to make the airbox mod yourself we have complete kits available. The kit along with the Amsoil or the Afe stock replacement filter is a great set-up. For towing I'll take cold air over hot under-hood heat anyday. The Cool Hose and the TAG are also great additions.

I have the psm kit on mine. I don't think you could go wrong with the diy or the psm kit . Obviously the diy is cheaper though. I am running a True Flow air filter and Cool Hose also. These are the only mods that I have so far. I'm not sure if its getting broke in now or if its the mods but I'm definately getting better mpg now. 18. 5 mpg auto 3. 73's around town when I can keep my foot out of it. The egt's are alot better plus it cools down faster too.

did the mod to the air box myself with the AFE super stock system, which is the drop in filter and their torque tube. Works great! Quicker spool up and lower EGT`s for sure.

More pics. The PSM Kit is great. I ordered the lower half Intake with flange installed. Truck runs well, alos, with the cool hose, there is more turbo whistle.
