I know this has been beat to death but here goes. I'm going to install a closed system cold air intake, after reading several threads now I'm not sure which to buy, Keep in mind I'm looking for more MPG's not more noise. I've heard good things w/ the volant but others say it gets their truck oily, the S&B looks okay but haven't heard much about it. The PSM seems reasonable in price and uses drop in filters that I would like. A buddy is a shop foreman for dodge and he told me K&N will void the warranty. If anybody has the cool blue w/ the PSM intake w/ the amsiol filter and a volant carbon composite intake manifold how is your fuel milage?

I have the volant intake on mine and love it so far. However, its a little noiser that the Bully Dog that I have on the 04. The only compliant that I have is that its a tight fit and sits real close to the exhaust manifold. I just made a little bracket to bolt on an empty hole and keep it out of the way alittle more.

I have the cool blue w/ the PSM intake w/ the Amsoil filter, to be honest, my mpg didn`t change. The EGT`s did drop, cools down faster, turbo spools up a little bit faster, and I don`t have to mess with the oil.

I tow so I would do it again!

It should only take about 40 years of marginally improved fuel mileage to offset the cost of your planned intake modifications.

I've got the Cool Blue and PSM (stock air filter). I really like it but from my observations and from what I've read in the TDR magazine, mileage improvements are very difficult to quantify. I would not try to cost justify the purchase.

No improved mileage, no improved performance. Maybe a little EGT reduction. MUCH more turbo whistle
Cheers

If all you are about is performance, check out the $10 Home Depot airbox mod. It will deliver what the multi-hundred-dollar intakes do, which is quicker spool and lower EGTs. If you want bling, (which is OK BTW!!), get the higher dollar systems. In no case should you expect to measure any difference in MPGs.

Hope this help, please let us know what you decide.

100 Proof

100 Proof, call me stupid if you must, but what the heck is the $10 Home Depot airbox mod? I've heard others mention this but nobody said what it was. Thanks!

Banks Did the field research on the the New Intake,I could easily Pull down the minder to 60% to 70% always on most aftermarket intakes,I have not been able to pull the minder past 20% with Banks Intake, the Housing is awesome, the filter is so big you can stick your head in it,its outlet is 6 inch and does choke down until the tube,The filter is completely incase to be protected for harmful chemical (winter time road spray).

Icebox Cold Air Kit

Does anyone have any input on the Icebox Cold Air Intake? I am using the AFE and it is too loud for the family. Also, cold air would be better anyway!

Thanks!

I put the Performance Systems Cool intake/cool blue tube/TAG on along with the ME from Geno's. Around town my mileage (on the computer/mine is accurate enough for comparison) went from 18 to 20. 5. I was expecting huge increases pulling my 11. 5K fiver but that was unchanged... . 12/13. It did run cooler EGT's though, pulling through the Ozarks I couldn't achieve > 1200*F mostly 10-1100 which is a great improvement. It has quite a different sound, empty I can hear a slight increase in tone from the exhaust but pulling, Oo. My truck rivaled the big rigs pulling out of the truckstops. Cruising there is some drone but not too bad, I don't mind it but some might. Overall, I'm glad I did it. What is the Home Depot mod by the way??

Here's my $8 Home Depot airmod. Reduced EGT's 25-50deg. No mileage increase. I'm still not convinced the cost-benefit is there for the big dollar aftermarket items. Might do the 7layer dry filter when it's available for stock airbox drop in.

Airbox

I did the Cool Blue Hose, TAG, PSM modded air box and the Amsoil nano filter. I saw a reduction in EGT's, snappier throttle response-quicker spool-up. Then I installed the ME pipe, it is a little louder than stock. I left the CAT and resonator as many have suggested as to not have drone from the exhause system. Again a further reduction in EGT's. I tow a lot and had lower EGT's more my goal. The Cool Blue Hose adds a little more temp insulation than stock, they have test results on thier site. The PSM airbox mod brings more air into the airbox via a hose that goes down alongside the fenderwell. I live on dirty, dusty roads and have not seen an increase of dirt over the stock filter/airbox. I like the Amsoil nano, you can just blow it out and re-use it, I do that once a month. Nothing I have done affects the warranty according to my dealership. Removing the muffler and putting in the ME did affect the muffler's warranty, can't warranty what is not there, but it did increase the lifespan of the muffler.

PSM, Amsoil, Cool Hose combo

I do the same 180 mile trip pretty much every weekend in the summer so I've used it for some mpg testing. My truck is an 05 4x4 3500 SRW with 3. 73 rear end with about 35,000 miles on it. When the truck was stock I got about 18. 6 mpg for the trip. I added the PSM, TAG III, Amsoil, Cool Hose and Aeroturbine muffler and averaged 19. 4 over several weekends. Now I've started experimenting with a Smarty programmer. On the 60hp setting with added timing I was at 20. 4, on the 90hp setting with timing I was at 21. 4 and the next step will be to try the 30hp setting which Marco claims is the best for mileage. I have been driving the truck around town on the 30hp setting for about a week now and think the 90hp setting will probably prove to have the best results on my truck. The downside of the 90hp setting with the stock turbo and intercooler is a lot of smoke and of course potential transmission damage. The upside is that it's like driving a different truck! OK so the Smarty part was a little off topic. Bottom line on the Amsoil since that was the topic for this thread, great filter for the money. Lasts up to 100,000miles, easy to clean and you really get into splitting hairs over the filtration difference between all of the drop-ins. The PSM since it has been mentioned is a great up-grade for the money too. The TDR article in the last issue sums things up pretty well. In the next installment of that article Pete assures me that he will be adressing the different components and their effects on egt's.

If a engine gets dusted and has a aftermarket filter of ANY SORT it won't matter if K&N(whom I bet filters as good as most of the others) or Amsoil,Violet,AFE your warranty is in the grapper. Don't matter WHAT a DEALER or SHOP FOREMAN tells you.

Lowes style

I did the Lowes style air box mod. 3" black pipe with a 45 deg. elbow facing the front. Egt's are somewhat lower when towing. I had a piece of left over pipe and "stickumpucky" but bought a new elbow. RTV seals the top joint going into the bottom of the box.

Cool Hose with Icebox Cold Air Intake

For anyone that is interested... The Icebox will work with our Cool Hose. I got a chance to test fit one yesterday. It's a pretty nice set-up. I will take some pics if anyone is interested. You can get them with a variety of filters including the Amsoil, AFE and I even have some UNI's that will work. Great job on the Icebox guys! Handbuilt quality can't be beat!
