Bought a 95, 2 wheel, auto, 65K late last fall ran great. Yesterday it was rather cold, minus 10, thought it a good time to check out the truck. It started great, I covered part of the radiator so the thermostat opened and closed normally with the temp gauge going almost to the 190 degree mark and then down as usual. Everything ran fine till about 10-15 miles down the road at 55 MPH it kicked out of O/D. I stopped and idled for a few minutes and it kicked in just fine but again 10 or 15 miles it kicked out again. In town it reacted just fine kicking in around 38 MPH.
It seemed as the transmission was cooling down and kicking out. I don't beleive this is normal even in cold weather. Anyone with any suggestions.

Make sure that the temp sensor has a good dry connection. It's in the cooler line near where it comes out of the transmission. It may be corroded.

Milt.
I too have a 95 2wd auto just like yours and have had a similar experience, konly mine has done the exact same thing while driving down the freeway at 65 mph. This has happened a couple of times and the outside temps were well above freezing. Everything going just fine when it just comes out of overdrive and the overdrive off light in the button comes on, reach up and punch the button and goes back into overdrive and stays just fine until a year later does the same thing. Maybe an electrical interference of some kind. Had a guy who drove truck tell me when volkswagon came out with there electronic ignition on some of the later beetles he could key the mike on his CB radio when following them and their engines would quit. Just a thought. I havent pursued the problem with my trk because it is so intermitant.

The going down the road mystery shift is pretty common. Nobody seems to know why. Mine, like yours David is so intermittant I don't worry about it. Kinda makes you jump when it does it, though. Milto, I don't know exactly why yours is doing what it's doing. It's normal for it to refuse to lock up until it warms up, but to shift and unshift. . hmmm, I just don't know.

I am new around here, but I also have a 95 2wd. It seem to act up more running highway speeds verses in town. Mine was the TC acting up because of the TPS. Try cleaning the TPS with electric motor cleaner and see what happens.

Mine has done the mystery shift before also. I found by pulling over and putting it neutral for a couple of minutes it stopped. Found this out one day when it was shifting back and forth a lot for 50 miles,I stopped to check the fuild in N,level was fine, but the truck never did it again for 300 miles. Since then I've done this a few times and it seems to work,I've even stopped it without pulling over, just coasting in N. Maybe air somehow gets trapped in the AT and causes it?Try it and see if it works,it might just be the solution.

Test your trans temp sender.
