Cold engine/cold start "Charging" rates?

I am assuming that the "intake heater grid" on these monstors takes a lotsa juice, but is it normal on a cool/cold engine to go from like a 12 v charge rate then jump to the 13. 5 - 14?



It does charge at 13. 5 - 14 after warmed up, again, assumption being the big "toaster" in the intake?



Appreciate any ideas and comments?

Cold weather mind will charge as high as 14. 2 at times.

That is normal. . I bought an intake grid heater saver from practical solutions but I think they are not making the items anymore. . It was a thing that read coolant temps and when the coolant got to 70 degrees, the sensors in the coolant jacket opened the circuit for the heaters. This saves the length of time the heaters run and the charging of the batteries can start sooner... .



See the 2 wires crossing over the valve cover? The plugs in the water jacket is the sensors. The wires go to the relays for the heaters. I believe this would be fairly easy to make if you know where to get the coolant sensors
