Driving an '02 HO w/6spd. Had the stealer activate the high idle feature about a month ago. Took two trips, the 1st they couldn't figure it out and the 2nd I took the procedure and they said the program was "mysteriously found" and turned on. A few mornings the low temp has been around freezing... according to the thermometer in the cab... but I have usually been out later that night and start it early the next morning and just figured the block hadn't cooled down enough to kick the high idle feature on. This morning the thermometer in the cab said it was 27F, yet no high idle. E-brake is set, trans. in neutral, and temp guage is at left side. Didn't touch the throttle or the brake. My question for you folks is: Does your high idle feature kick on at 32 exactly or is it usually a little cooler or does it vary?

Appreciate the help.

One of the conditions that needs to be present for the Cold Engine Idle Feature to be enabled is Intake Manifold Temperature less than 0°C (32°F). I imagine the air in the intake manifold will always be warmer than the outside air after its trip through the turbocharger.

Dunno

Had mine done over a year ago and it has never kicked in. Even after sitting 2 days without being pluged or driven in the winter in Mich. U would think that would have dont it. I'm going back to get it re-done ( seems like a pattern with DC). ANy Idea if they wil charge me for this one. I still have plenty of warranty left bu think that my say " we did it once for free you are paying this time. "

For those that have had it work, How long after starting the truck does the idle start to increase?

My dad had this done to his '99. I have never seen it work. He always leaves his truck out in the cold and forgets to plug it in. I was going to this programed into my '98 but i am not so sure that it works all that well. I would like to know if this is something i should have done, or forget it and figure out somthing else for high idle in the winter. When its -10F i don't enjoy starting my truck more than once or twice a day if i can help it.

It works great with turn on!

When properly activated it works great. Temps need to be in the upper 20s or colder. Idles up after a few seconds to 1200. I have not had the 3 cylinder kick in. This is in my work truck, 2001 6sp. It has an EBrake. When in high idle the Ebrake still thinks it is at zero throttle and will stay on.

You would really like how fast these trucks warm up with the Ebrake on and the engine idling 1200.

Someone good with a DBR ??? Scantool could do it. Wayne from NE Minnesota is pretty darn good at it.

Mine ..

works well. The early version had the on/off polarity reversed. It has to be cooooold to work, because the engine takes forever to cool down. The intake heater grid also delays the idle-up, so it takes a while to ramp up the idle. You do not have to set the parking brake to have it operate correctly.

For what it's worth, mine works great. Around 30 degrees it will go into the high idle, and around 10 degrees the three cylinder function will start.

quoting dmagenau:

"figure out somthing else for high idle in the winter"

A guy here in the office just has an ice scraper he shoves between the seat and the accelerator pedal on his 1st Gen. I may just try that.

The sad part is the GM had the cold high idle perfected on their late 70's/early 80's 5. 7L diesel, at least I never had problems with the one I had.

I have tried 2 dealers, and called another about it, still no go. Leaving the truck out in the cold and still no 1200 rpm. When I hear that there is this cool (maybe I should say warm) feature, I need to have it. What kind of scan tool can do this? I have a few friends that repair cars, I wonder if their computer equipment might help me? Any advice? I hear the dealer in Hopkins MN has done this correctly, it might be time for a new dealer...
