How long to idle in the cold?

Mine started at 7500 miles no matter what the temp. Miss starting sometimes, white/blue smoke for couple of minutes, idled very rough and acted like not running on all 6. All this after it sat overnight every time. After it warmed up good started and ran ok, just had rough idle.

Took it to dealer. Had TSB done, no change. Injector kill test did not show any problems. I had them keep it overnight and see what they thought. They agreed it had a problem. Star had injector swap tests done and finally dropped the exhaust manifold to see which cylinder was producing the smoke after sitting. Replaced #6 injector.

Things are much better now except still idles rougher than it used to.

Called the dealer and one (of the three) service guys said they had no info yet. When I went by at lunch they had valve cover off and injectors out. C'mon guys. So I had my wife stop by when she got off work (she works 300 yard from the dealer) and she found the mechanic.

Mechanic said he reinstalled 5 and was replacing 2 and 3. Ordered today and the truck should be ready by tomorrow afternoon.

Well, looks like the tsb's may have helped, we'll see. Picked up the truck last night at 8pm, temp outside was -2F, truck had been sitting for 36hrs. Let the grids cycle once, turned it over and she caught and ran. White smoke, little rough, ran up to 1000rpm almost immediately. Let it go for 2 minutes like that, was still rough so I burped the throttle, idle evened out.

Below is from the workorder writeup:

Customer states on cold starts--you get alot of white smoke and a very rough idle

Cause: Flash Module

08194992 FLASH: FUEL ECON IMPROV, WH SMKE ON STARTUP, ACCUR OF FUEL MILES - TSB 18-037-04

Customer states the vehicle is getting very poor fuel economy

Cause: Flash Module

08193591 FLASH: WHITE SMOKE, ENG. STUMB/MISFIRE OR FLAT SPOT IN PERF - TSB 18-007-04

From some of the other posts, I'm not 100% convinced the injectors are OK, but we'll run like this for now and see.

Thanks everyone for your input :)

I had all the issues you describe, and it took three trips to the dealer to get it right. Today they are installing 2 new injectors - #2 and #6. Hope this fixes the problems. Keep on the dealers. Maybe DC or Cummins will actually come out and admit they have a very expensive problem on their hands.

I am confused. I thought a reflash wiped out what was previously loaded. Why would they need to do 2 reflashes?

Mine is also a 1/04 build. She runs smooth as silk - except, when the temps are below 20* or so, after a cold soak of at least several hours, she runs a bit "rompy for the first 30 seconds - 1 minutes. White smoke, yes, but then she settles down . This morning 5*. White smoke for the first couple minutes, then clear.

Just stating my experience for comparison purposes.
