Two Parameters

From what I understand, if the air is < 32F and H2O < 190F then engine will ramp from 750 to 1000rpm after 1 or 2 min. If the water and air are below 20 then I think it will go to 1000rpm instantly. So, if you plug the block heater in, and it's below 20 outside, I don't think it will go to 1000 until it runs for a minute or so. Again, I am hearing this second hand, so there may be something different. That is kind of why I started the thread, to see what others were experiencing and to see what the default is. :{

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Yesterday morning it was 8 degrees and the truck took off like a banshee, this morning it was about 28 and the truck idled for a minute or two, then slowly went to 1000. Thanks, bzingre, for the great explanation. Now all I need to know is how to go out and play in the snow and not get sand and salt all over my new baby. :D

No Kidding

Dean,

You have the same problem in CT that we have here in IL. Too much salt and cold weather. Mine is filthy too.

If you all have more input on the cold start thing, please enter it on the thread.

Just wrap in in plastic. :D :D

Just wrap in in plastic.

Casey I can't let that one go. Last Friday when I had my truck pinstriped it started to snow late morning. The paint was dry at 5

and I was about to head for home in the slop(sand and salt). The guy that did the work came out with a roll of Saran Wrap and covered the some of the striping and stuck it on with tape. It stayed on for the trip with no ill effects on the job. So there.

Not this morning

Ok, now I am baffled. I was 11F this morning when I went outside. Damn thing started at 750rpm for a min then bumped itself up to 1000rpm. It has a mind completely of its own. I was sure it was going to start instantly to 1000rpm but no, did the normal thing... ???? Who knows...

This morning, truck in the garage and plugged in for 3 hours. Overhead console said 34 degrees and went to 1000 RPM after two minutes. Out of garage overhead went to 24 degrees. Drove 22 miles to work, fuel stop midway (18 mpg), and let idle in parking lot before shutting down with overhead reading 21 degrees. Idle again went to 1000 rpm after two minutes. I can live with this.

32 degrees this morning. It went to fast idle in 2 mins. (I guess I did not time it,waiting on the wife):D Two times it has been cold enough in Central Texas so far to do it.

I think the lights just came on. I think we are talking about ambiant temperature (console temp, outside temp, whatever) when we should be thinking manifold temperature. I didn't run my truck yesterday and it was quite cold all day. The temp was 27 this morning, but that 900 + lbs of cast iron under the hood of my truck didn't know that because it had been sitting in the cold garage all day yesterday. I think there is a sensor for manifold air temp and also there is one for the water temp, so the truck uses it's own information to set the idle, not the weatherman's. This would explain why the truck went into high idle this morning. It would seem reasonable to assume that if you had your block heater on the manifold temperature would also be higher because you are heating the metal mass somewhat as well and the truck would not go into high idle when started. Does this make any sense? or is this what everyone else was thinking all along and I was just to dumb to get it

Started up my truck this AM after sitting overnight in below freezing temps (20's probably). . I'd say it was 12 hours of sitting. It went straight to 1000 rpm right off the bat. I guess I just have to trust it knows what it's doing.

Count me as another with sometimes delay, sometimes instant high idle. Unfortunately, I didn't take particular note of the differences in temps for the different responses, and now I'm back in Florida, so no chance to check it now.

I picked up my new truck on Thursday, 21 Nov, at the dealership in Florida, drove it straight to the topper dealer to get an A. R. E. Z-series topper installed, drove it home, loaded it up, and hit the highway that day for Wisconsin for deer season. Now I'm back in Florida with two-week old truck with over 4,000 miles on it already, and still no heavy load for break-in. :(

The truck sat outside in deer camp, sometimes without running for several days, & no plug-in.

Brrrrrrrrrrr,

Well greetings from Southeastern PA. On Saturday it was a nice fall tropical 8 degrees outside and just to test how good the electronics are on the engine I fired it up with no block heater or waiting for the intake heater. It fired right up but put out a minor haze of blue smoke and stumbled for 5 seconds as it roared instantly to 1000 RPM's. And the idle stayed high for 3 minutes. I have noticed that even if the engine is at full operating temp that if the ambient temp is 32 degrees or less the engine will go to high idle after a couple of minutes sitting.

We also had the joy of an 8" snowfall on Thursday and I am happy to report that these trucks do handle the white stuff just fine:D. The new limited slips are a lot better than the old ones and you have to be really careless to get the back end to start going sideways;) . We had more snow Thursday than the past 2 years combined. Thanks el nino.

I can get mine going sideways without any trouble at all with the limited slip in either snow or mud. I'm quite dissapointed in mine.

Well, here's a wierd one. It was -2 F here this am, and my truck had sat since Sunday AM. Fired up just fine (ran the heater twice just to be sure, wasn't plugged in), and it ran at normal idle for a minute before going up to 1000. Ran great, far better than my 2nd gen would in that kind of weather, but I was sure it would of high idled right away. .

Just thinking out loud here but does the engine idle up with the brake applied, maybe some people are jumping in applying the brake then the high idle would be canceled till after all the requirements for the idle were met again.
