I know that you are not supposed to let our trucks idle when the temps are cold due to cylinder washing etc. My question is when these 03's go up to high idle is that enough rpm's to let it sit for 5-10 minutes. where I live in New England we are having some of the coldest temperature's than we have had in a long time. Anyhow, I have noticed that in extreme cold it goes to high idle right on startup and not after the two minutes. I have read of others doing this so I am not concerned I just want to know if 1000 rpm's is sufficient enough to let it sit for a few while the thick oil circulates. Also, at work I can not "plug in" and this morning (I worked overnight) at 0' degrees it fired right up with no smoke.

As a more "old school" diesel person, before joining this forum i'd let my truck idle all the time. Winter was the most, but if it was 20 minutes in the summer to keep the cab cool i'd let er buck. In the winter, sometimes in severe cold i'd go to the bar for 4-5 hrs and let it sit out there and burn fuel. Never thought twice about it! Reading mopar service manuels they consider extended idleing 6 or more hours, other places say 10 min. max. I now watch it a little more but i'll be damned if i'm going to jump in my truck when 10 degrees out and jump on the big road after 10 minutes of warm up. Just my opinion.
