RIP George Jones

East Base was where they kept the missiles the whole East Base had its own chow hall med facility motor pool electrical power plant everything you would need to keep people out there. I cant remember how big the base was but it was thousands and thousands of acres it was freakin big. And the biggest percentage of East Base was underground.

Mike do they still have that Air Reserve base near Bangor?

Sorry Big, missed this one until now.

Yes, the Air Guard is still there (Refueling Wing) at the Bangor Airport. I have read that BIA is the only airport sharing runways with the military. That is a left over from it being Dow Air Force Base back before Loring was built. Has two long runways, some big stuff lands there.

There is a big Russian plane that lands there on occasion, Antonov 225.

Seth and I watched it take off one day and I kid you not, the pilot had the several of the rear wheels backed out on the grass so he could get use every available foot of the runway to get a running start... ... he was blowing crap about a half mile up the Odlin Road when he wound her up.

Couple of pictures here.....

Take my word for it, this thing is BIG!!!!

A lot of stuff lands here for refueling or to kick off unruly passengers from overseas flights such as drunken "brits".....

Here is a you tube video of a smaller Antonov taking off in Austrailia just to give an idea of the runway required to put one of the birds in the air. Leave the volume up so you don't miss the term "Vodka Burner"... ... . :D

With Russia's latest threat with the supposed new missle may be time for a SAC comeback

SAC RULES!
A patch that cropped up when SAC was "retired". ACC made a mockery of the old SAC and violated numerous nuclear protocols which made headlines. They have since remedied the errors of their way.

Another allie of convenience. The Ruskies and the Chi-Coms would have their boots on our throat in a nanosecond, if the opportunity presents itself. I know others disagree, but I would never trust either one.

It was a real challenge to NOT run and tackle and pummel "visitors" to the flight line after the wall went down.;):D
