I just returned from a trip to Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay), Alaska. I learned some things about my new 2003 in 35 below zero weather.

I have a 3500 DRW HO with 6 speed 4X4. I am carrying a 2003 Western Canada RV 9. 5 camper with slide out (about 3500 lbs loaded with gear I guess).

For those not familiar with Alaska, the haul road (Dalton Highway on the map) starts above Fairbanks and ends in the oil fields of the North Slope. It is the farthest north one can drive in the US. The road is usually in good shape (by Alaska standards) but is subject to extreme weather, avalanches and the numerous big rigs.

Overall, the new truck did excellent. Fuel mileage, something I am still a little disappointed in, was between 10 and 12 mpg with the camper. In the Brooks Range, grades often exceed 10 percent and approach 12 I believe in some places. Only number one fuel is available and I used Power Service additive.

I did have a few problems that were cold related. The brake, steering and clutch fluids did not like the cold. The clutch became especially difficult to use. Out with the stock fluids and in with the synthetics. Also, there isn't many places to plug in the block heater. I didn't stay overnight in Deadhorse due to the -35 temps. However, I did stay in -8 and the truck struggled to start in the morning. Due to the engine breaking in, I didn't have synthetic oil in the crankcase the the oil pressure came right up (at least on the guage).

The truck had no problems on the hills but I sure wish I had a Jake on the down sides with the weight. Next purchase.

If anybody would like, I could post some pictures of the route. I had done it in the summer before but this was my first winter trip on the road.

Overall, I love my truck!

:)

Yes I would love to see some pictures. Until last summer I had never been very far north before, Edmonton was the furthest. I drove to Hay River, NW Territories, which seemed way up there for me. First time in my 35 years I've seen the sun up past 10:00. Pretty bizarre.

I will get some pictures up tomorrow. Regarding the synthetic in the steering, I had no noise or difficulty with the steering which surprised me. My 95 and 2000 CTD's steering were so noisy when it below -10 was it was obnoxious. Syn fluids fixed it though. However, I didn't have any clutch problems with the 2000. The 95 was an auto. I will probably change out the steering while I am at it too.

mbaston I may take you up on that. I need to visit Alaska.

Since 1987 I have been to 49 states. 16 years and I haven't ever been to the biggest one of them all :)

Vaughn

Mbaston,

I'd love to see the Alaska photos also. Would you allow me to join you and Vaughn?

As I read posts on the TDR website from time to time written by Alaska residents, I'm always tempted to ask questions and see if I can get a dialogue started. I'd like to learn all about a trip to Alaska from someone who lives there, not from someone who has just made the trip once.

I've been contemplating a trip to AK pulling a travel trailer for two or three years now. I have a copy of "Mile Post" and recently bought a video prepared by a couple who made the Alaska Highway trek in a motorhome. From everything I have been able to read, the highway conditions are greatly improved from what they were 20 or more years ago and a trip with an RV is completely reasonable.

Would you consider starting a thread to discuss and answer TDR members questions about an RV trip to Alaska... ... maybe in the RV forum?

Would you be interested in serving as a tour guide if a group of us could agree on a date to get together to make the Alaskan Highway journey in the summer?

Any information or advice you would offer would be much appreciated. I'll bet there are a lot of TDR members who have been considering an Alaskan Highway adventure.

I lived in Anchorage for 8 years, and made the AlCan trip 5 times, both ways. Even in the last 10 years the road has greatly improved. The only trip not made with some sort of RV was the first one. Would do it again in a heartbeat, only next time, I will take my time. Most of my trips were rushed.

HBarlow it would be cool to have a mini "BOMBvoy" to Alaska  I am getting the urge for a long road trip. I loved the drive to NW Territories even though I was rushed on that trip. From Washington State it took 28hrs of hard driving to get there.

I am wondering what the best time of year would be to go there. Maybe June-July? The only thing I don't like about the north is the bug population but probably not much can be done to avoid that.

If I went to AK I'd like to visit Denali, Mt McKinley, cruise up to Fairbanks, maybe even do the Haul Road.

mbaston when you come to the end of the Haul Road can you get a good view of the Arctic ocean? Anything interesting to see there?

yes, yes and no

It would be great to set up a trip up here. No problem being a tour guide. I get summers off (educator). July or August is best. I have to drive to California this summer and perhaps everyone can join me on the trip back up.

Sure I could set up thread on traveling to Alaska. There are other Alaska members that could join in too.

Alyeska, the company that runs the pipeline, won't let anyone out into the actual oil fields where you would find the Arctic Ocean shores. They were allowing commercial operators to give tours out there but I heard that was stopped due to terrorist threats. I don't know if that has been lifted but I can check.

I have a website on flying a private aircraft to Alaska. There are many pictures on it. I lost my medical and can't fly anymore but many people have asked me to keep it running.

You can find it at:

I lived in Fairbanks, Ak. for 12 years and traveled the haul road several times. Packed into the Brooks range once from Atigun pass hunting sheep. The Brooks range is a very beautiful and remote area. Hope it stays that way!

Marty & Vaughn:

I think it would be a fine opportunity to see Alaska on a trip led by an Alaska resident who is also a TDR member and RVer. Marty, I appreciate your willingness to lead a group. If you're serious and really don't mind, I'd like to seriously try to plan a trip for this summer. I think I can get away in either July or August. If a few of us TDR members could join you at the US-Canada border and go all the way north it would be a great trip. I wonder how many would participate?

Have you already planned the date when you will be returning from your trip to CA?

I quickly reviewed your aircraft website. I'm going to go back and look it over and see how much of the information is relevant for ground travel.

Please start that Alaska thread. I have a couple questions to ask. If you and other Alaska resident TDR members will provide opinions and answers it might become an interesting discussion. Few of us have ever traveled Alaska and many TDR members are RVers and travelers. I'd bet many have an interest in Alaska.

Trip to Alaska...

This has the potential of turning into an interesting trip with

fellow TDR members. I would certainly like to tag along if the others agree.

I would be happy to only go as far as Anchorage or Fairbanks, whatever would make an interesting and scenic tour. Not too worried about going way far north past the Arctic Circle (but that might be fun).

I'm certainly game for such a trip. We'd need to coordinate a meeting point and figure out about what sort of time frame as far as travel time. I would suggest a coordinated trip up to Alaska, touring, and then everyone is on their own after that to stay longer or head back and do whatever.

I don't know how long it typically takes to drive to the heart of Alaska but hopefully 8-10 days will be enough time to take in the sights on the way up there as well as what's to see in Alaska.
