Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Cold weather "choking up"

Stock 98, 5 speed, (K+n only mod), acts like an old carb motor with the vacuum pull off not working. I take off in 2nd gear, and around 1800-2000, it falls flat and smokes (blue/white) :-{} . Let off and shift up to 3rd, and all is well-- Oo. pulls strong to 3000-3100. Sometimes it does it in third, and then ok in 4th. Never seems to do it in next gear up. What can it be? I changed filter, no difference. Only seem to notice it in cold weather (below 20 deg) Thanks.

I had something similar happen a while back and it turned out to be a fuel problem. check the fuel heater both to see if it is working and also to see if its taking on air at thr elec. conn. JoeG has some great pics of this prob. dielec grease stuffed in where the wires enter. Crap fuel will also produce your symptoms. Not to be confused with jelling. heavier fuel like summertime stuff will definetly produce what you have mentioned This is what my prob . turned out to be. I didnt think it could be the fuel since I was running it in 2 1st gens and a J. Deere 970 with no adverse effects. If swan lake is where you are your right around the corner from me in Benton. Try what I tried and if it doesnt help give me a shout.

Low Power

Next time you start the truck when the engine is cold let the oil pressure come up to normal and speed the motor up to 1600 to 1800 rpm and see if it misses or smokes blue/white if so you need to have your timing set up to 16* How does the truck start when its sat all night and cold, does it miss at all then or only when you go down the road?

Classic low timing.....

If it only does this when it is cold (20 is not very cold) it sounds like a degree or two advance in timing is needed.



I noticed this with mine (timing stock) but only at temps below zero when first started and driven.

mine does the same thing... like everyone else says, it seems like a timing thing. I havent advanced mine yet.

Sounds like I need to get the timing to a better setting. All is well when it is warmer out, just a cold moring thing. I run Howes in the fuel, and know other Cummins owners who get fuel from the same place I get mine with no issues. Thanks folks.
