theoretically, would it be possible to wire a switch or relay into each of the injector circuits, therefore giving you the ability to shut down injectors at will?

this should load the engine sufficiently to help it warm up alot faster, just like the old 3cyl/high idle of the 2nd gens.

thoughts, suggestions?

Sounds possible in theory, but I wonder how many codes you would throw or if the truck would go into "limp" mode. The ECM (and DCX) might not share your thoughts on this one.

I think the cold weather idle up feature and the on-demand high idle are what take the place of the 3-cyl idle, but I may be incorrect.

Your rite, opening any injector circuit will set a code. I know its spendy but an exhaust brake does a great job of warming things up quickly.

The dealer can turn on your high idle feature for you. Once they activate it you turn your truck on and then turn you the cruise control on push set and then use the coast/excell side to adjust the idle up or down you can set it up to 1500rpm and the truck computer will shut down three cyclenders autimticaly.

JonPalmer:

I thought the 3-cyl idle was a 2G thing and didn't apply to 3G. Am I off base here? Just asking as I have never owned a 2G CTD.

True fact, 3 cylinder idle is a second gen thing! The 1500 rpm manually control high idle should warm things up good, if not an exhaust brake definantely would just like Prarie Dog said.

the high idle alone isnt enough to warm things up. at -40 and with a winter front you're lucky to bring the needle off the floor. at the moment i have no use for an exhaust brake, or want to pay that kind of $$ to warm up my truck :)

also paying the dealer to enable my high idle is like getting a steak at a restaurant only to discover they want another $5 to cook it... .

the 3cyl idle in the 2nd gens isnt perfect either. it doesnt come on soon enough & if you plug in the block heater forget about it.

now if i could shut down injectors at will, without throwing codes..... where are you EFIlive? ;)

Cold Weather

As most know we are having a little cold spurt here in MN. In response to what I am reading about cold weather warmup, I think that the third gen trucks are an improvement on average from the 2nd gens. I had an 01 with the high idle and 3 cyl feature. Comments are correct, those features didn't activate at all if the block heater was plugged in. It had to be about -15f to make the 3cyl work and maybe 10 for high idle at all. Ironically, with the 3 cyl activated, the truck would warm up from -15 faster than it would from say 30 degrees. I think it made about 600 egt! This morning in comparison, was -10 and I plugged it in for about 45 min, then started it and left it plugged in. It hit 165 in ten minutes after starting, with the cold weather front closed and the heater on cold and off. Not bad... . I think the cold weather front is the key...
