Fuel Tank Vent

I decided to put a locking cap on my truck. When I went to the parts store to get one the guy said he thought all newer vehicles had siphon prevention devices built in. Is it possible to siphon from a ram and is a locking cap needed?

I didn't know that about the Rams. I just put a locking fuel door on my truck so they can't even get to the cap. Works great.

Locking fuel cap (NOT)

I tried the locking fuel cap once. The thief just stabbed the poor thing with a screwdriver and off it came. I found it in the tall grass when next I mowed.

The locking fuel door is the way to go. OR ... remove the filler tube and weld in your own anti-siphon screen.

However...

If they are real determined they will just kill the tank, catch as much as they can, and let the rest run out on the ground. (Nothing is fool proof. )

A thief on a real mission is pretty difficult to stop. Most security items (including the lock on the door of your home) really only deters amateurs. Hopefully a lock on the cap or door of the vehicle will deter the majority of thiefs and send them onto the vehicle parked next to yours. Fortunately most thieves are also lazy. ;)

Point well taken about the locking cap, probably the way to go is a locking door.

Junk Mopar locking caps...

Mechanism gave up in less than six months on first cap. Dealer gave me a replacement.

Another six months, and it was difficult to engage the key, etc. Was *****ing to a station attendant (Yeah, Oregon. . no self service). He says locking caps are a joke... . can get it off in less than five seconds... . I say go ahead and try. He was right.

Just get yourself a pet rattlesnake and let him stay coiled around the fuel compartment filler cap. Imagine late at night the thief opens the fuel door and :--) :-laf.

Tony

put on a locking cap, and you're likely to have a cut filler hose... that's what the smart theives do anyway, you can use a much bigger hose... :-laf

SCClockDr~

Sorry for the slow reply. It's an AMI billet locking fuel door. Here's a pic of mine, I went with black on black. Not a big fan of chrome. I ordered it from a 4x4 shop by my house. I payed $120 for it, a little much but I get store credit. So it was worth it. Stillen carries it for less.

Like I said in an earlier post, the smart theives are pretty difficult to beat. These devices are likely to send the backyard thief onto the next truck if they cant just open the door and siphon. That might save you a tankfull some night.

I'm liking that one, would even be sweeter with a round coke machine style lock. With that kind can they just unscrew the allen screws and take off the whole door?

i believe the top and bottom screws are just for decoration, but the 4 side screws are nut/bolt combo, so if they get it to spin, they have nothing to hold the nut on the backside so it won't be coming out easially

did you paint it, or buy it to match your truck ?

Hmmmm... . I got a loud obnoxious airhorn on my truck... maybe I should wire it to come on when the fuel door is messed with by anyone but me ???
