OK, just bought a combo tool box/fuel tank (50gal) any input on plumbing, pumps, wiring?? I understand the restrictions on EPA smog laws, such as venting, spillage, etc... . But I would like to plumb it directly to the fill neck, using a 12V pump controlled from the dash. Any experience out there? Thanks, Dale

The cheap-effective route:

Gravity feed using a $20 fuel selector solenoid (Autozone or other). Hit the switch at 1/4 or whenever and slowley watch the gauge climb as you go down the road (3/8" lines can drain 24gal in 2hrs going through a small filter).

I did some research on cheap fuel pumps, and most were not rated for diesel. Plus they were 2-3 times the cost of the solenoid valve. This workes for me.

good luck

Kind of too late now but the Transfer flow fuek tank/tool box combo comes with everything you need for plumbing, electrical and control. . And excellent instructions.

This is how I plumbed mine in.

Use your aux tank to feed the lift pump and use the oem tank as transfer to the aux. The lift pump is much happier with a possitive head feeding it!!!!!!!!!!!!! 27" of column head is equal to 1 psi so I figger I have about a pound and a half PRESSURE at the inlet of the L/P. I did use -8N line for the feed so I was insured addequate volumn of fuel.

cheers, Kevin

Here's mine - same setup I had in my '91...

Fuel comes outta the tank thru access hole in bed, to small filter ahead of the anti-siphon valve, to Carter pump, then tru the larger spin-on diesel fuel filter, then to "Y" pipe into the vapor return line next to fuel filler pipe - works great, and has for over 10 years. The anti-siphon valve is wired in parallel with the pump to stop fuel flow when pump isn't operating, and is needed even in pure gravity flow systems to prevent overflowing the main tank when it gets full - so if ya gotta wire that anyway, why not install the pump too... ?

Gary,

Nice filter setup.

What is your transfer rate with the pump, and which brand pump did you use?

I was initially going to use your exact setup, but I bought the same solenoid valve and it has been working since. However, I would like to install a mechanical pump for faster transfer flow because I can remove my tank in less than 1 min and have it out of the bed when I need the bed space (long bed next time). I would like to be able to transfer from the tank to another storage tank for ease of unloading.

Thanks,

matt

It's a Carter pump - I forget the number, but around 5 psi and 75 gph - obviously, will transfer enough fuel to fill the main tank in about 1/2 hour... Disconnecting the single supply hose from the in-bed tank and loosening the hold-down bolts allows it's removal... I normally use the in-be tank as my primary fill tank, mix my fuel additves there, then pump down to the main tank - that allows all fuel to be filtered at least 4 times before reaching the VP44 and engine...
